My Kimber Montana in 280ai using 160abs is an elk slayer. My family and I have killed 12 head of game with it over the past few years including 4 elk at ranges from 200 to 500 yards. Anyone having trouble killing anything with a 280ai is a poor shot.

Love my 280AI I had rebuilt from a 30-06 five years ago. Since then, I've killed 8 elk between 40 and 350 yards. I've been happy with the results. It's shooting 160 grain nosler AB at 2940 fps. No animal has made it far.

Far cheaper still to put the time into fitness so carrying the same rifle is easier.
People nitpick gear constantly to lose ounces, when losing pounds of body weight is a hell of a lot cheaper and benefits other areas for sure.

Lots of good options out there in rifles today. You have been given some good advice. I'd also recommend a 30-06 or 7mm Rem mag. Those 2 are classics and will work well on elk.

..."results may vary", but everyone of his shots was boiler room. Glad it works for you, but, especially given the $$ for cartridges and the relative difficulty in finding them compared to the performance I have seen it would never make a short list for me. JMO
That is a sweet deal Ken. Thought about getting a 308for fun,but I'm a 30-06 guy.
Keep toying with getting a Weatherby in 30-06 for back up,but I've never needed a back up to my Rem.700 30-06...lol

I have a Ruger American in 270 and as mentioned they shoot very well as long as you don't torque on that stock too much. If you wanna go lighter and use the same ammo that is an option. 
If you really want to get a new rifle I found my Browning Xbolt on gunbroker for $500 and shoots very well, especially for a sub 7# rifle chambered in an overbore cartridge like 26 Nosler. As I'm posting this there's at least a dozen or so at that price chambered in every elk cartridge from 7mm08 and 270 to 300 WSM and 28 Nosler.

If I wanted lightweight and affordable and a great budget rifle I'd look at the Kimbers or a Savage lightweight hunter in the caliber you chose. Love my Savage lwh. It's a pleasure to pack and it shoots great. Whole package is under 7lbs.
