i have trail cams set up in my hunting unit.i have ben getting many pics of elk deer and bear.what is bothering me is some of the elk and deer look realy healthy and others look like skin and bone.why is this? today i checked cams and got a pic of a bull that looked good upstairs but his body was weak and rib cage was showing.this is the bigest racked bull my cam has got so far.
the spikes and forkes are better thicker and fater bodys than him.same thing with the deer.why is this and will the skinny ones die off before season?
this is the young bull im talking about.

On a positive note, it may be as simple as the elk and deer losing their winter coats. Around me, in Montana, the elk and deer look pretty ragged right now too. Hopefully that's all it is. My guess is, in a month or two, they will fatten up and get better lookin'. I suppose an old bull is kind of like an old dog. It just takes longer for them to lose their coats and pull out of that winter stress.

thanks i feel better now.i dont know a hole lot about az elk but am learning.the one pic im thinking of is a young 4x4 his rack looks good but like you said and others have said on different sites it the winter coat thing.im in a (kinda) tuff unit and this is a archery hunt.so being i havent taken a elk with my bow i dont think im going to let any (spike) rag horn or bull walk past.
plus i need the meat for the freezer.
