You're taking animals at 300 yards with a 30-30?
At 300 yards a 150 grain bullet is only hitting with 565 ft lbs of energy and with a 170 grain bullet it hit with only 720 ft lbs of energy. Would the bullet even expand at about 1300 fps? Not to even mention the rainbow trajectory at that range.
Don't get me wrong because I know the good old 30-30 is quite a killer within its limitations.
I'd say it just depends on the bullet. Would you shoot a pronghorn at close range with a .357 mag? I would and that's basically the same numbers (and I think most .30-30 bullets are designed to open at low velocities. And, he may use a bullet with higher BC. I load my son's .308 down to 2425fps with 150 Speer BTSP bullets. Other than BC, that's essentially a .30-30, but it carries antelope killing power out past 300.
Certainly further than most people shoot their lever guns, though...
