Several people on “Hunt Talk” ask me to post some recovery up-dates from my quadruple by pass.
Everything is going well, in fact better than the Doctors predicted.
The mending of the heart-artery grafts take care of themselves, as long as I don’t do anything really stupid for 30 days, so far so good.
The three main areas of recovery involve my leg where the arteries were taken from, my lung capacity and my breast bone that was split in two for the surgery. .
The leg had some swelling and pain, and I was told to keep it elevated to help reduce swelling and pain. I have read three different books seated with the leg propped up on a stack of pillows. It’s much better, although I will have some big scars to tell lies about.
Nothing to do about the beast bone except baby it. I’m not allowed to pick up anything over 8 lbs for a few more weeks, and I can’t shoot a rifle, pack out a buck or do any serious chores for another 10 weeks, depending on the X-rays.
My lungs were partially collapsed from the surgery, and getting fully inflated is job #1.
They gave me a stupid little plastic thing to breath into, but I hate it, so after consulting with medical recovery people I am walking and deep breathing. When I got home from the hospital , I could barley make it 200 yards, so I focused on ¼ mile. After a few days I hit a ¼ mile, and started working on a ½ mile. This morning I made it ¾ mile without stopping , so the goal for this weekend is 1 mile.
I’m all but sure this hunting season is over before it begins. Even if I could get the time off and work out all of the details of my out of state LE deer hunt, the thought of putting a .270 to my shoulder and pulling the trigger while my chest is being held together with bailing wire doesn’t sound to bright.
I’ll post up again in a few weeks, I should be well over a mile a day by then.
