Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

7mm Weatherby Mag

Pretty guns but they have a reputation for recoil. In the olden days 7mm mags also had a bad reputation for unnecessary meat mutilation, although modern bullets may mitigate that significantly. The significant problem would be finding some of those modern bullets. I'm stuck with Hornady cup-and-core lead for now and lucky to have it. Those would splatter out of a 7mm mag.
I’d need some reloading supplies but not bullets. I have put up a probable lifetime supply of Barnes in several sizes. Mostly from Midway and Optics Planet, some from Powder Valley. They do turn up. I sold off most of my Hornady and Noslers and a lot of my factory ammo and turned that money around into dies, brass, powder, and mono’s as I’m eventually migrating to copper.

I know! right? My 7mm Rem is clearly what has been holding me back from success.

Its a late 1990’s BDL I dressed up in a grey laminate. I still think its cool. Maybe not Weatherby cool. But it’ll kill a deer out to at least 75-80 yards. Any further, I’m forced to use my 6.5CM (duh).

I think I am squarely in the gun cabinet realm where I could assign use only in 20 yard increments. 6.5, 260 Rem, 7HT, 7RM, 280, 30/30, 308, 30-06, 8x57, 35 Rem, 35 Whelen, 444M, 450M, 45/70

No Weatherby though…..🤔

Great gun. Beautiful.

That’s why I just bought my Weatherby. About the only thing I didn’t have and convinced myself I needed a new lightweight rocket.

Next up .257 because it’s a hole size I don’t have, and I like laser beams.

7mm weatherby tends to have the most ammo available (not as popular as the 300 or 257). There’s a podcast on Weatherby where they describe their ammo testing with new barrels. They said they use the 7mm because of availability.

I ended up passing on the weatherby by buying a late 1970’s 700 “classic” in 7mm Rem Mag. I overpaid for it, but that’s the way it goes sometimes with a rifle you just want. It “looks” to be in great shape though I have yet to pick it up from my FFL. I am pretty excited to see in person.

Just got mine, absolutely love it. It loves 160gr accubonds with Hogdon 4350.

I would have never thought a weatherby magnum was a good idea until I started shooting barnes copper bullets. The ballistics charts are awesome.

A made in USA Mark V are very nice guns.

Weatherby cartridges are always faster, speed kills...
Get the WB.
That said, A 7mm STW would be my choice.
Or make a 7mm 375 H&H.
My 8mm RM is a full-length 375 case blown out and I get over 3100 fps with a sierra 22 gr and over 3200 fps with a Barnes 200 gr loaded with a full case of reloader 26.
