Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

6.5 CM as a hunting cartridge... why?

Did you pretty much always use the 55 grain Hornady in the .220 swift days? I’m guessing a 1:14 twist?

I’ve had good luck with both the 55 and 60 grain Hornady spire point and used a few 55 grain ballistic tips as well for coyotes and a couple deer. Tried the 53 grain Barnes with some inconsistent results.

Yes, it was a 14 twist. I used 55’s, and 60gr spire points quite a bit for both coyotes and big game. Later on I switched to Sierra’s 52gr SMK’s for coyotes. They were really accurate, and fast. I took a few big game animals with that bullet, but most of the large critters were taken with the 55’s.

That was my point… that inherent ability comes from?

Same way you get to Carnegie Hall…

We can argue head stamp all day long, pick all that fly chit from the pepper, but end of the day it all comes down to practice and shooting a lot.
Understood. But I have a lot of respect for rifleman like Pat that have done it with old school rifles and cartridges. And the new ones. mtmuley

Refreshing seeing fantastic photos (yes photographs) old and new of an actual hunter not wearing the latest camo that cost as much or more than the rifle. Good job teaching your boys, seems they have a hell of a mentor, and rifle to boot.

What you have posted here is genuine and should make everyone smile and reflect a bit.

Edited to add a Thank you for adding a level of integrity to this thread that righted the ship and set a good course. Not saying that was your intention but that is what happend. Well done. 🍻

How did you decide which son to give it to?
I left it up to them. Shane chose a GA Precision 6 CM, John picked a Seekins Element in 6.5 CM, and Logan latched onto the old Sako…Logan is a full time government trapper at Harlowton, Montana. He worked two seasons on the Rocky Mountain Front assisting three different trappers over there with Grizzly, Wolf, and coyote work before getting hired a year ago at Harlowton.
The rifles were high school graduation gifts.

Logan on the left, and John with their first bucks. This candid shot is one of my favorite field pictures. They shot simultaneously and brought both of them down at once. I’d watched these bucks during August and September, up until the youth season opener in October. They were always together.IMG_0981.jpeg
