44 mag for elk !

You might of read my post recently where I purchased a Ruger 44 mag carbine semi auto and plan someday using it on a black bear hunt.Well Iwas talkng to the original owner where he said he has taken two elk in Colorado with this rifle. I was surprised anyone would use a 44 carbine for elk but he hunted thick timber and said his shots were very close.
Sure glad he parted with this rifle but I don't ever plan on elk hunting with it.

This year in Indiana my wife deer hunted with an 1894S in 44mag. She was able to shoot 2 inch groups off of shooting sticks at 100 yards. We never connected on a deer so I don't have any first hand info for you on deer size game at that distance. Seems like it could work for elk within 100 yards though.

We kill Elk with arrows I'm sure a well placed shot with a 44 would do the job. But I don't know how far of a shot would be ethical.

I have a couple of the Deerfield Carbines and they are great guns for deer. I'm sure they would be as good on elk at close range. . . .shot placement is the key... always!

I have a good friend who has taken a couple really nice bulls with a 7 1/2" Barrel Freedom arms Model 83 in .454 Casull. I see no reason that a .44 Mag carbine wouldn't be more than enough at reasonable ranges.

I use to have the Ruger 44 mag carbine, took a lot of deer with it.
worked fine on a couple of Black Bears too.
for shots a 100 yards or less, I think it would be fine for Elk.

So, hunting with a muzzle loader is OK, but a 44 Mag isn't ?

I am sure they would do the job ,only reason I would not think of using it on elk is that I have several other rifles that would do the job a little better if the shot was more than 100 yards.
Sure like that 44 carbine though.

When I was younger I worked in Zimbabwe as a guide on the Zambezi river. We carried 44 rem. mag. pistols for protection. We used 300 grain machined bronze bullets. One of my colleagues dropped a hippo with his. He brain shot it at close range.

I've shot black bear with mine. I think you could easily work up a load that would be deadly for elk, with a well placed shot.

I took my first 2 bulls with a 30-30 94.Tons of deer/pigs. Still have it.
I was thinking 44 or a 45-70 would be great still to use. A bit more distance...

Don't doubt the .44 would work great for elk in certain conditions. Sure be a bummer to have a good bull at 200 plus or so and be holding one. All in the expected range I guess. mtmuley

That's why I've hunted with a 30-06 since 78'...LOL
Rare to get within 100 yrds in this PJ count I'm in now.
Except when I walk out to take a leak,one will walk by...
