35 Whelen

I used the 35 Whelen Ackley Improved on two Plains Game hunts, '96, 2002. I used the 250X/2550 fps and the second trip the 200X/2970 fps. Pure killers. I killed Kudu, 2 zebra, Black Wildebeast, Blue Wildebeast, Red Hartebeast, and Oryx. I was also trying out some loads with a friends 300WM, 338WM, 375 H&H or there would have been more! I feel those weights at that speed are closer to the 9.3x62 than Remington's factory loads in the std Whelen. I once used the Woodleigh 310 sn/2400 to shoot a Eurasian sow up close. Big, clean hole, no bllodshot meat!
On the 2002 trip when foggy one morning, when parked, trying to see into a herd of Black Wildebeast on our left, we had three Rhino trotting from our right pass in front of the little Toyota PU close enough to brush the front bumper. My Whelen felt "tiny" in my hands, ha, same when we got almost too close to a Cape Buffalo and to a pond with 4 honking hippo. Big Guys! ha

Ruger made a 35 Whelen reissue, which it’s 30-06 lineage makes it attractive for the collection, .25-06 being the other.

Would it be useful in Africa or allowed to be used? Other calibers more useful in Africa?

Who has one?
I have a 35 Whelen Rem Model 7600. I’ve killed a lot of deer and multiple bears with it at ranges anywhere between 25 and 200 yards. I use it primarily as my east coast “brush gun”. Typically shoot a 200 grain bullet. It’s pretty lethal.

The 35 Whelen is a glaring hole in my stable of #1. I am currently looking for one with just the right wood. I’ve a very good friend I guided with up in Alaska. He will start his 20th season hunting big bears on the Peninsula. He carries a 35 Whelen as his stopper. Said there has never been a question; one and done with the Whelen. You would be just fine in Africa on any of the larger plains game with one.

Looked through my safe the other day and got to thinking. I have 2 Win Model 54 '06's, one might have to take a trip to JES and come back a 35 Whelen AI. The only thing is trying to find a good stock to mitigate recoil a bit. The 178gr Stone Hammer would be smoking about 3200fps

My heart is there but ima have to pick marriage for now
Always pick your marriage first, but at the same time a 35 Whelen is very nice rifle and certainly capable in Africa. You'll never know how strong your marriage is if it doesn't get tested a bit. ;)
A friend of mine got a custom 35 Whelen from Oregunsmithing as a retirement gift for himself. He came over to sight it in at the range and now I'm wanting one as well.
