35 Whelen

Ruger made a 35 Whelen reissue, which it’s 30-06 lineage makes it attractive for the collection, .25-06 being the other.

Would it be useful in Africa or allowed to be used? Other calibers more useful in Africa?

Are they making it in the No. 1 or the M77? I’ve always thought the .35 whelen was sexy. I went with the .338 Win Mag in an M77 tang safety for my heavy hitter, but the .35 is still damn cool.

Have always wanted a 35 Whelen after killing a bull with one in about 90 with a Rem Classic. Been looking at a couple donor rifles, 700 ADL and a Winchester mod 70 push feed, both in '06, would go the AI version.

Believe the minimum for dangerous game is .375, but it would work great for everything else.

I'm no expert, but it's about 85% of a 375 H&H, probably legal and capable for everything short of the dangerous game.

Whenever I start wearing out grandpa's 30-06's they'll get rebored to 35 Whelen

Dangerous game generally includes lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, & cape buffalo. Outside of those, you'd be alright

Going to be pretty near identical to the 9.3x62, the quintessential African plains caliber.

I've seriously considered getting one of them re-bored to 35 Whelen or the slightly different 9.3x62. Both are just a bit behind the 375 H&H for power. Both are very good cartridges.

I've never owned a 35 whelen but I love my 9.3x62. Never been to Africa but I'd imagine the 35 would be just fine for plains game. Might be able to use it on dangerous game in some countries.

Honestly rebarrelling to 35 Whelen sounds like a GREAT use for any of the very common/affordable worn out 30-06’s out there looking for a 2nd life.

I think that’s pretty standard for the whelen, some are even slower than that
