Wolves killed calf, four sheep, owner says
By :KATHERINE WUTZ
Three wolves were killed by U.S. Wildlife Services on Flat Top Ranch near Carey yesterday in response to a series of reported depredations.
Landowner and rancher John Peavey said the wolf pack had attacked and killed one of his calves on Saturday night, then returned to kill a total of four sheep Monday and Tuesday night. One other lamb was severely injured.
According to wolf advocate and tracker Natalie Ertz, the pack was the same one that had been involved in depredations at Cove Ranch south of Bellevue in early June. A control order had been issued after that incident, but no wolves were killed at that time.
Suzanne Stone, spokeswoman for Defenders of Wildlife, said she believed the pack had two adult wolves and a few pups remaining. Stone and Ertz agreed that one of the remaining adults was the alpha female, which could give the pack a better chance of survival.
