Not really responding to those ?s directly, but in my view, most all of SCOTUS justices are political animals - just read their bios. Presidents rarely snap up disinterested bystanders for the court. What confounds some of the bucketing is the surface inconsistency that often can be aligned if one digs deeper. While starting to feel a bit dated after the populist rise in the GOP, Thomas Sowell's book Conflict of Visions does provide a construct for how some seemingly inconsistent views are in fact entirely consistent.
