So, I have a cool old custom rifle with a shot out barrel and I’m thinking about having it rebarreled to 280 AI. Thoughts?

So if I do go with a 280 ai, which scope that was available in 1960 is appropriate for a 1903 Springfield match rifle re-barreled with a once shot out M54 Winchester barrel(that’s sadly shot out again)and stocked by the guy who designed the Ruger 77 stock and went on hunting trips with Bill Ruger, that Speer bullet guy, the RCBS guy who’s museum in Oroville it hang in until shortly before I got it, and that Jack O’Connor guy who feuded with my favorite outdoor writer from Salmon, Idaho?

I’ve got a suspicion that you know the answer better than most everyone else around here to that one😁

Have been all around the 7 w/RUM, Mashburn, 7 Mag, 7-08...7 PRC on order. Never an Ackley Improved...have always been piqued.

I truly think that the 280AI is one of the most “balanced” rifle cartridges out there. If I didn’t already have a few other rifles in cartridges on either side of it (270Win and 30-06), with abundant components, dies, etc, I would own one. If I ever build a “one rifle to rule them all” custom then it will be a 280AI. It really seems to be the sweet spot in so many ways, and still has strong roots in some history that gives it panache

It’s a sweet handling rifle, it weighs 9 lbs as is but feels lighter. I think a 280 AI would work pretty well with it.
