24' MT Mountain Goat Harvest

Some interesting info in the 2024 Montana Mountain Goat harvest report. Mind blowing the amount of 1.5-2.5 year old goats on there.
That report is a prime example of how incompetent Mt FWP is.

I'm one of those in the harvest report and they got my goat listed as a nanny and off on age about 8 to 9 years.

But yes I do agree it's pretty incredible how many sub 4 yo goats are harvested.

They got mine wrong too. Biologist wasn't available that day so a warden did it and he even admitted he was clueless.

The incompetence in checking animals extends to CO as well. They measured the based circumference of mine at least 1/2” up the horn. I told the college kid measuring it they were doing it wrong and she said no, this is how bases are measured. I asked what her definition of “base” was, and that was the end of that conversation…

I know that all three tags in my district were filled and it only shows mine on the list for that district. Not sure what happened, but it seems like that shouldn't be hard to get right.

Both auction tags killed small females? Something fishy about that.

Also seems to be an inordinate amount of animals with one long, fat horn and another short one, with nearly the same circumference as length. Methinks someone got their spreadsheet columns mixed up.

Seems that most data collection methods have some issues. For sure it is only as good as the person taking the measurements. I'm in a CWD zone in Texas with mandatory sampling required. They take the glands and then measure the antlers and age the animal. Last year the person taking the sample did a good job and used the big pry bar thing to open the mouth and look at the jaw to age it.

This year the person took some very odd measurements for the antlers and a friend had his done the day before and mentioned that they didn't look at the teeth on his deer to age it. I mentioned that but then forgot and she never did even pull back the lips on my deer.

Looking online my buddies is listed at 2.5 years old and mine is listed at 3.5 years old. Based on tooth wear I would guess 6.5 on his and 7.5 on mine. No idea how she came up with the age without looking at the teeth.

Yes. Seems that just about anyone could look at that and tell that they messed up putting the length of the left horn in the column for the circumference of the right horn and the circumference measurement in the column for the length of the left horn.
