2024 season, Its gonna be busy

PTO and insurance are the reasons I work in county gov. It's definitely not for the pay .

I must work for the wrong government. I became a government employee 2 years ago and haven’t gone on a hunt since because of a lack of time off.

Clearly. How many weeks do you get off after having two years in.

3 weeks. You start at 0 hours and have to accrue it. No unpaid time allowed. We, just recently, were given 5 sick days per year (must accrue as well) so that definitely helps. The insurance is damn good and the hours allow me to spend time with my kids every single day.

Definitely the wrong government! I get 8 hours of leave and 4 hours of sick time every 2 weeks. Plus I get comp time for any overtime and award time for my appraisals.

I think you found out that you will be going moose hunting since you made that post. Have you joined the ranks of the unemployed yet or are you waiting until you take off for Alaska?

Nope told the boss I needed it off he looked at me I shrug my shoulders and that was about the end of the conversation.

I usually have a couple weeks in the bank in case of emergency

Also get 4 paid weeks of paternity leave to use within 6 months. Lots of nice perks. I think a lot of the tech companies are doing stuff like that. The truth is, guys that abuse it would take advantage of any system. Guys that have a lot of work to do end up with a diluted hourly rate anyways with extra hours due to aggressive project deadlines. I was at a gov range last week, 14 hr days baking in the hot desert sun, nothing glamorous about it. I think in the end it’s just easier for the accounting team to not have to account for accrued time off. Also encourages people to not bank it and live a little which I’d be a fool to complain about.

You don’t accumulate vacation since it’s unlimited so if you leave or get fired they don’t “owe you” you unused time. Fancy confusing way for them to save a $

The busy fall has already kicked off. I chased some pronghorn around the other day and bumped into a few animals. Good thing I have a tag for all 3 in the same area come Sunday! Oh yeah... bought a camper a few weeks ago. Gonna be better than the damn wall tent for most of the season. I'll probably need the tent on my 4th season Colorado hunt because of snow levels. We also got our newest family member today. Great looking wirehaired griffon. Appropriately named Chewbacca (under protest of @JLDemo ) ill be chasing pheasants in next year's post!

What an amazing life.
