2024 NCAA wrestling March Madness!

The #1 seed goes down at 125. 3 Overtime matches in the 4 quarterfinals matches. In the semifinals there will be an 8 seed vs 12 and 3 vs 10 seed. This weight has been crazy all year!

174 Quarterfinals next. Mekhi Lewis vs Carter Starrocci. Maybe the match of the tournament.
That was a very boring match. Starrocci wins 4-0 with a first period takedown and rideout. I don't think Lewis changed his level until the third period making absolutely no full attempts to get to Starrocci's legs.

PSU is once again running away with the championship-essentially a done deal before the medal rounds today. Amazing strength and depth in their wrestling room.

It’s going to be another awesome day for wrestling fans!

Oh, and my son is a WVU wrestler—they have two All Americans and are loaded for bear in the coming years.

Cheers!

PSU secured the championship after the semifinals. They need 2 of 6 to win tonight to set the all time team scoring record.

Congratulations to your son and WVU!

2-10 in the team race are only separated by 12 points right now. It’s good to have the team race this tight. we will see some of these 5 and 6 year guys who probably would have forfeited out after they got beat keep wrestling to help their team.

I'm excited for tonight. I want to see Fix win one. That PSU mesenbrink is fun to watch, high pace.

After the medal rounds I took a bit of time to look over the brackets. In the finals tonight there are 6 number 1 seeds and 4 number 2 seeds wrestling. 1 and 2 seeds will face each other in the finals at 141, 157, and 197. The lowest seeded wrestler in the finals is the #10 seed at heavyweight and the #9 seed at 174. The lowest seed to place was at 141 pounds; the #26 seed finished 8th. There were four wrestlers seeded 20 or lower that became an All American with the highest being the 20 seed at 165 finishing 6th. At 125 four of the top eight placers were seeded 12 or below and the 1,4,6, and 7 seeds did not place in the top 8. 133 was the only weight that the top 8 seeds placed in the top 8, but not in order.

And another championship in the books…looking forward to Philly in ‘25.

Cheers!

Lots of good matches throughout the tournament. This tournament will go down in history for most points scored by PSU, 172.5. And by widest margin of victory, 100. It’s also the first time 2 athletes won their fourth NCAA title in the same year.

I think something needs to be done for stalling, yet again. If the only direction a wrestler goes is backwards, that’s stalling. If someone kicks out of a takedown attempt on the edge of the mat they are called for stalling, but if they kick out of a takedown in the middle of the mat it’s not stalling.

I also think what constitutes a takedown needs to be changed. I saw several situations where the aggressor had both legs, head to the outside, and the defender sat down on their hips but the defender had a half ass crotch lift so they didn’t call a takedown.

The transfer portal. I don’t like it. I like that student athletes can easily transfer schools if they are truly not comfortable with the school they originally attended, but there are a lot of rumors of who’s offering the most NIL money and what seems to me to be tampering and recruiting of athletes who are already at a school. This isn’t just a wrestling problem, I think it’s NCAA wide in all sports to some degree.

All in all it was a good tournament. The level of wrestling from all the conferences is far and above what it was 10 or 15 years ago. With true freshman ready to compete for a national championship.

Went to the Pittsburgh Wrestling Classic today. There are going to be some NCAA all Americans coming from this years teams. It was the 50th anniversary and they recognized all past participants definitely a nice gesture. The participants today got it a lot better than we did 25 years ago. I look at all the media nowadays compared to then and am jealous. We used to essentially just be able to reference records. Now they can watch dang near every match opponent ever wrestled.

Since there’s a lot of Montana guys here. Mike and Bill are characters. I talked to the their dad once in the Iowa wrestling room and he was telling me about a mountain lion hunt where Mike climbed the tree to get closer to the trees lion.

About time for a 2025 thread, @Gellar. I’m headed up for the PSU-Iowa match on Friday night. Let’s Go State!
You got an extra ticket?

i think there is a serious possibility of it being a shut out for PSU. That would mean there needs to be one upset (Barr over Buchanan) and a couple tossups (133, 149, 157) to go to PSU but I don’t think they are far fetched by far.

About time for a 2025 thread, @Gellar. I’m headed up for the PSU-Iowa match on Friday night. Let’s Go State!
Here you go. Iowa wrestler is listed first, penn state 2nd.

125 - Cruz vs Lilledahl - Cruz is a Sophomore vs Lilledahl who is a true Freshman. Lilledahl has wrestled many big names in the past on the freestyle circuit so he is unique for a true freshman. Cruz had a rough start, but has turned it up the last two matches and maybe the lightbulb has turned on? If Cruz can get an early takedown I see him rolling as hes tough nosed and an in your face brawler like Iowa has seen from so many 125s in the past. I think Penn State finally tops Iowa's 125 in this one by decision. Iowa 0 PsU 3
133 - Ayala vs Davis - These two faced each other several times at 125 last year splitting a few decisions. Ayala ended up higher at NcAAs then Davis. Ayala is coming off an "Upper Extremity injury" where he set out at Ohio State. I will take Ayala by decision. Iowa 3 PSU 3
141 - Block vs Bartlett - Block is sucking a lot of weight, he is tall and lanky. Bartlett has been around the block a time or two. Bartlett will be looking for bonus points in this match and should expect them. Bartlett by MD. Iowa 3 - PSU 7
149 - Parco vs Van Ness - Both highly rated wrestlers. Van Ness has beat Parco, when he was at Arizona State. I hadn't watched Parco a lot until he came to Iowa this year. He has an exciting style, somewhat defensive. But if he gets a takedown he is tough as nails on top. Van Ness was injured last year after an upstart Freshman year where he made a strong run at NCAAs. This is a tossup and could be a preview for the Big Ten finals and the NCAA finals. I look for Parco to win this one by decision. Iowa 6 - PSU 7
157 - Teemer vs Kasak - Teemer is coming off a leg injury with hsi first match back vs Ohio State last week where he handled Sammy Sasso. Depending on which poll you look at either wrestler is ranked 1 or 2 or vice versa. Teemer lulls opponents to sleep and explodes for a big, flashy move right when you think he's about to get taken down. With Teemer being out for an extended time with injury conditioning could come into play. Iowa has Freshman Miguell Estrada listed in their probables to who has been impressive in his matches, but I think if he wrestles this time it will burn his redshirt. Teemer by decision if he goes. Iowa 9 PSU 7
165 Caliendo vs Messenbrink - these two wrestled 3? times last year with Messenbrink laying the smack down on Caliendo. At 165 there is 3 levels of wrestlers, Messenbrink is tier 1 which is a big step above Caliendo in Tier 2 and then the field is tier 3. Messenbrink by major decision. Iowa 9 PSU 11
174 Kennedy vs Haines - Kennedy came in as a highly touted recruit but has not produced on the big stage for Iowa in his 5 years. Haines came in as a highly touted recruit and finished 2nd and Champion at NCAA's. Haines is up 2 weight classes from last year. He lost earlier in the year to Keegan O'Toole but we will see how he handles the rest of the top competition at this higher weight class. Haines by major decision. Iowa 9 PSU 15
184 Arnold vs Starrocci - this is the match that everyone, in Iowa at least, is talking about. Arnold called out Starrocci last year and then did not wrestle against him. Arnold called out Starrocci again this year in a press conference after the Ohio State meet and rumors are that he will not wrestle again this year as true Freshman Angelo Ferrari is also listed at this weight. I haven't seen anything to suggest that Arnold can stay with Starrocci. Starrocci is a 4 time national champion going for his 5th which would be the first and could be the only ever. Starrocci by decision. Iowa 9 PSU 18
197 Buchannan vs Barr - Buchannan is like cool hand luke. He is very even keel and smooth in his actions. I have not seen him get seriously pressed yet this year and this will be the first major test of him. I havent seen Barr wrestle this year, but last year he was impressive in his red shirt year. I will go with the veteran Buchanan by decision. Iowa 12 PSU 18
HWT Kueter vs Kerkvliet - Kerkvliet is the returning national champion but his thunder has been stole by the return of Olympic Champion Gable Steveson. Kerkvliet is a full sized athletic heavyweight while Kueter is a half sized athletic heavyweight. Kueter is very good at football and is actually on a full ride with the football team, but he was a 4 time Iowa State champion, and 2 time junior world medalist with 1 of those being the champion at 213 lbs as a senior in high school. Kerkvliet is looking to make a statement. Kerkvliet by technical fall. Iowa 12 PSU 24

Both Iowa and Penn State has hammers up and down their lineup. Unfortunatley for Iowa, where they have hammers, Penn State has a bigger hammer. I hope that Iowa goes with their lineup who will be the starters at Big Tens and NCAA's but the Brands like to throw out odd balls occasionally. Like I said earlier I consider 133, 149, and 157 tossups. 197 Iowa is the favorite, but I can realistically see Barr winning this match. I would not be shocked if Iowa only wins 1 match or does not win a match.
