It’s been a bit of a grind so far in Montana. Fortunately, as an un-elite, flannel wearing, wood and blued rifle carrying, non-influencing hunter I embrace the suffering and yearn to toil in the mountains. Until yesterday I had been spending the season trudging around in places with very few elk, very rough terrain, and lots of grizzly bears. I’ve seen a few elk, but not a nice bull that wants to be taken home and eaten. Taking the .338 for a walk is still rewarding.

I have also been hunting unlimited sheep, since I have a better chance of finding a legal ram in my local mountains than I do drawing a tag anywhere else. I’ve been finding some sheep, including a young ram.

I also found some goats, and briefly got a glimpse of what I consider to be a pretty nice ram that quickly disappeared into the timber, rocks, and snow.

Sounds and looks like it's been a great hunt so far! Looking forward to seeing pics of that nice bull, when you do cross paths with him. Awesome rifle as well!

That rifle is sweet, and the beauty marks make it even better. I killed my first elk with one very similar, but I had a white line recoil pad which was hideous compared to the red pad, but it felt good. Lol Elk thumper extraordinaire.

I hadn’t spent a day looking for deer until yesterday. I took a break from the mountains and went back to visit my people’s homeland in the northern reaches of the state. I love hunting the places I did as a kid, and to make it even better my dad came with me.

We found quite a few mule deer, a few whitetails, and window shopped bucks all morning. Later in the day we were glassing a series of coulees tucked away on the north side of a ridge that I always find a few deer in. I spotted a really classic looking 4x4 and decided to take him home with me.

Fantastic! Grats on your nce looking muley! Dig the wood stock on that .338!
A hunt with pops is a memory maker, tag punched or not.
You pass on the sheep or still in the works?

I’m planning to head back up as long as the quota is still open to see if I can find an older ram. Going after elk again next week.
