2024 College Football šŸˆ Season starts tomorrowā€¦. Yee Yee

What is the deal with a fan base claiming their conference is the best? Odd to me. mtmuley
Itā€™s carryover from the BCS days. Teams that didnā€™t belong would get selected because of prestige/traditin. Ohio state got steamrolled in a few of those games. The true national championships were the SEC conference championships. Lead to a lot of bickering about which conference is better, strength to schedule, who really belongs. All that kind of stuff. I like the playoffs.

I guess I canā€™t articulate it either, which does indeed make it odd. I feel it though and root for the Big Ten- it makes it more fun.

Roots in regionalism, I suppose- which is out the window now with the new world order of college football. Rutgers and USC being in the same conference is still just crazy to me.

And here is a hot takeā€¦ if you dig deep enough to the bottom of those regionalist roots you may see even remnants of the Civil War.

Discus.

Two teams from the NFC East are in the championship. I'm not really jacked about it. Kinda the same thing? mtmuley

Logically, yeah- itā€™s the exact same.

In practice, for me anyway, itā€™s the exact opposite. While I easily root for another Big Ten team, I could never root for another NFC North team. I tried with the Lions, but Dan Campbell saved me from myself.

Total contradiction, I know.

Yeah. I'm all over the AFC champion. mtmuley

Nothing to do with it. Not all of the schools even existed during the Civil War and not all of the schools that were in the South are in the SEC. Most states have several schools that play football and usually only 1 or 2 that are SEC.

Fwiw, football is by far the biggest sport in the South. It's not even close. There aren't that many pro teams, so football fans pick their favorite college team to cheer for.

For many, I suspect you are right. For some, I feel itā€™s probably a factor- Iā€™m not saying there is anything wrong with it.

Both the University of Mississippi and LSU mascots are related to the Civil War. As are the Wisconsin Badgers, oddly enough (albeit loosely).

I feel like according to @jimh406 we could play EA Sports College Football to determine the national champion and he would still argue with the winner.

Thatā€™s crazy. I thought Dayā€™s goose was cooked after the Michigan game. It was an amazing turnaround and stretch run.

Itā€™s the craziest coaching comeback since Tony Bennettā€™s Vols won the natty the year after going down to a 16. Even still- he better beat Michigan next year or the OSU fans are going to want him canned.

I think the long bye week hurt my duck in the rematch with the Bucknuts. Not saying they would have won , but less time off I think they would have played better , my youngest son txt me after the game and said all the teams that had the bye week were outscored 49-3 in the first qtr of the second round which showed a major advantage to the teams that played the week earlier , that the one thing I hope they tweak is less time off for who ever the top 4 is

Agree with you and your son on this- if there is one thing I hope is changed with the playoff next year, itā€™s less of a break/or eliminating the byes altogether.

LSU mascot Mike the Tiger didn't appear until 1936. Ole Miss mascot is Land Shark since 2018. Neither are related to the Civil War.

Perhaps I am mistaken here, but my understanding is that the LSU football team was known as the ā€œFighting Tigersā€ since the 1890s. (Not named after an actual tiger, but rather a Civil War infantry unit).

Fighting Tigers Origin

Ole Miss mascot prior to 2018 was ā€œColonel Reb.ā€

Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Virgina and Iā€™m guessing other team names apparently have Civil War roots. I just find the history of it fascinating, and I think maybe it explains a bit of the north/south rivalry that exists in college football- Iā€™m not saying there is anything wrong with it whatsoever, in fact I think it is kind of cool.

And another thing, the SEC needs to give up that weak ass late season wink wink bye week I mean, game against weak sisters of the nobody and go to a nine game conference schedule. Thatā€™s been pissing me off since the BCS era for the last 20 plus years, theyā€™ve always done it to give their best teams an advantage with a week of rest before the SEC championship game Down the homestretch and anybody that disagrees with that is full of crap

Just sayin
