Well I finally did it. after hunting montana for 14 years, having many close calls, and passing on bad and ethically wrong shots, I finally killed my first elk. Thanks to my brother for all his scouting and legwork, we went into an area he killed his bull in last year. In this district you can take a cow or branched antler bull with the general tag. We left the truck at midnite on opening morning to make sure we would be where we wanted at first light. 20 minutes after shooting light a herd of 40 elk crossed the saddle at 50 yards in front of us. No legal bulls in the bunch, so took tis big 3 year old cow and couldn't have been happier! Packed her out in one trip, 1.5 miles back to the ATV's, topping the ridge at 9200 feet elevation, higher than I had been for a long time! Awesome day spent with my brother, freezer full of steaks and burger, and great memories. Pictures will hopefully be up in a few...

Way to stick with it, bet they come more frequently for ya now. Enjoy the meat and the memory!

Nice job! It really does seem like the first one is the hardest. Then they don't seem so mythical!

Nothing better than a young cow elk. Congrats! I don't think I'd call it a curse but more is still to come.
