if you're looking to experience the West then just go, whether or not you buy the OTC tag is up to you.
Not that big of a deal to quarter one up and haul it out, as long as you don't go 5+ miles in by yourself. Just plan ahead a little bit and prepare in case you put one on the ground.
I've...
Yah, good luck on this hunt. Why in the world you want to drive to MT to shoot another whitetail is beyond me, but have at it, to each their own, especially along the Milk. Have fun! (y)(y)
yah big f-ing deal, we named the unit...oooooohhh
2023 draw odds from MT Website: 181 tags, 23,190 people applied. the LE tags and species are typically once in a lifetime, and not everybody who draws the tag are willing to hike up there and do what needs to be done.
Bring your bear spray up...

I did both of these as day hikes. The longer one as you can see was 17.4 miles and 4-5k elevation. The other was nearly 15 miles and about 2500 feet but with about a 60 pound pack since that’s when I planned to camp. So for me, mentally, I’d rather go absolute balls out for a day...
just saw this thread/post, did not read most of it but was drawn to Greenhorns helpful pics/post. Love the references Greenhorn, his advice is spot on. I went in with family who drew the 329 tag in 2017 and we came in from the west from 323, a healthy hike but not a death march by any means...
Well now if the buyer is a hunter from here on hunt-talk, I would certainly share some waypoints to good hunting spots, share the wealth & help out a fellow hunter!
It's been tough being away from our adult children, none of them followed us out here and we miss them terribly. The biggest bull elk in MT doesn't mean a thing to me if I can't share the hunt or a hike with my son....
"Are you no longer MT Bound" Haha, maybe not, but I will probably just...
and just to wet the appetite a little, most of our animals have been shot in the nearby national forest, and almost all of them are within 1.5 drive from the house. These are a few examples....
We've recently listed our house for sale outside Helena, MT. Built in 2018, ~ 1,830 sf single level w/2 car garage.
An outdoorsman's paradise with thousands of acres of National Forest/public land hunting and fishing almost within a stone's throw.
it's been a great home to us, PM me if there...
hey if you don't like Missoula we're going to be putting our place up for sale soon outside of Helena, great view of the mountains and within spitting distance of national forest! More to come...
I will never be able to unsee that..... why????
seriously though, you're giving it a hard effort that's all a guy can do. just enjoy the experience and getting away from the rat race for a bit
This has been a bad year for rattlers outside Helena, have seen 3 near the house, the third one bit our 5 month old Golden in the face about 3 weeks ago. He's recovered very well, got him to the vet in less than an hour for antivenom and meds.
The pups are full of energy and want to play with...
keep an eye on the Davis Wall Tent website, they have sales every now and then or deals. I bought a 14'x15' this spring and it's been great, used it during spring bear season and will be using it this fall for elk.
I've been on one MT goat hunt but was not the tag holder. Take a friend or two, make it a fun experience
I'll probably get flamed for this, but I just don't see what the excitement is over goat hunting, I.just.don't.get.it..... I'd rather be chasing a mature bull elk up some steep and timbered...
