Would be great to see a few HTer's on there, and ones that can work with landowners/is a landowner, work with outfitters/is an outfitter, as meaningful change will come when the Stockgrowers and Outfitters Association see the same positives as the Public Land hunters. Politics aside, everyone...
That's a great question- my understanding is "yes". But again, I am not as well versed as many that are contributing to this thread. We all know that 99% of "us" would support selective tag cuts, different season end dates, or price increases, because we see the benefit each could provide and...
I agree that these numbers are likely not very accurate. I'd be surprised if non-residents didn't take the harvest survey call more serious than our own residents, which likely skews the numbers to look like residents aren't having as large of an impact as the non-residents. As residents, we all...
Ideally, that region would have a cap as well, both resident and non-resident, that would prioritize overall herd health than tags in everyone of our pockets for an 11 week general season and 10 day traditional muzzleloader season.
Great cartridge. Any idea on bullet choice, or at least general type? My 7mag (also mounted with HSLR 4-16x50) has been my go to now for 9 years and has taken everything in this state from Coyotes, Deer, Elk, Sheep, Bear, and Moose, all with HSM ammo loaded with 168gr Bergers, both VLD, and more...
Aaaand take that same number of non-residents per region, multiply it by 10, and that's how many resident tags are sold for that region, Colorado doesn't have good deer hunting by just limiting non-residents. Take it a step further, and make all the tags valid until November 10- Limited entry...
Complete and accurate data is always a good place to start when any kind of change is being proposed. I know we all would benefit from Montana FWP modernizing in ways they can right now to start gathering more accurate data, whether that's hunter effort, harvest success by HD, or license sales.
Because we'd be the first state to ever have simultaneous seasons..
If what you're pointing out is people shooting animals illegally and leaving them to lie- frankly there isn't a season structure that is going to fix bad ethics, poaching, or failure to be aware of the regs.
If you're worried...
Can't speak to the super elite hunters, but they're not going home empty handed, either. Again, I think the point is that at 15.6% of the deer tag proportion is taking a disproportionally high number of mule deer, and doing so in a concentrated area, namely region 7. Residents are also taking a...
I agree- there are certainly areas that come to mind such as the Custer where it would be an issue. However, the blue plates outpace the resident elk in Alzada, Glendive and Baker by magnitudes. Also a good opportunity to say that Region 7 hunt districts could and should be broken into smaller...
The number of times I've heard a Sconny resident complain about the tribes for their fishing woes.... everyone has their scape goat.
The point many are getting at is that the vast majority of non-resident hunters, and resident hunters, do flock to certain areas of Montana, and this needs to be...
Yes. And I can see where you're going with this, but don't see it as a major issue in several R6 and R7 units, where there's either very limited elk tags, or it's general elk with extremely low densities, (600, 640, 650, 670, 690, 701, 702, 703, 704, 705). Archery only deer in most of region 6...
If FWP is hellbent on 11 weeks of hunting (plus shoulder hunts, trad muzzleloaders, etc.) - reverse the rifle and archery dates for deer season. Folks would either have to carry both a bow and a rifle into the field, or prioritize one species over the other, not to mention eliminating rifle tags...
I think it was @antlerradar that said it best in a different thread that R7 is the overflow for the entirety of the state for Mule Deer. This includes residents and non-residents. I'm one of them- I live in region 3 and my dad is in region 5, and, historically, we looked forward to our "eastern...
I've missed @BirdManMike's post over the years, apparently. Mike- what you do is so fascinating to me- the connection with man and dog is one of my favorite parts of bird hunting. You bringing Roach (and others) into the mix, as well as seeing wild falcons get involved, is really something...
