Wyoming west general 2024 LATE planning

Back in Texas now, enjoying my usual bout of hyperphagia after time in the mountains. Will get this writeup written up soon enough, for the amusement of all. I had been planning to cash out in Wyoming after all the price increases and whatnot, but I kind of get it now. SO MUCH area available...

Still on that herd, I keep zigging and they keep zagging. Son has taken up his day job on the starlink at camp so I’m solo now. We tried out iOS 18 messaging, it does work if I need it…

Yeah that sounds about right but the only bulls we’ve seen have been with cows which I assume is a sign of immaturity this time of year? Ie the larger bulls have given up and gone nocturnal and found sanctuary. So there’s an entire age class we haven’t located, as far as I understand.

We’ve met some very friendly locals. Shout out to wyomingites Robert and son Carson who were amazing ambassadors for their state, giving us rides to and from the seasonal closure gate in their side by side, and discussing some hunt plans. A good example I would hope to follow myself! As I’d...

I should probably come to terms with the fact I’m more “youth hunt outfitter” than hunter these days!

Quick update for those following along. Lots of hunters but so much space to hunt we have seen only a few distant orange hats in the field. Lots of cows but not many bulls in evidence. Some bugles this morning helped us, but we couldn’t reach them in time before they melted into the...

Add to that list of requirements “HATES moving camp” haha but yeah I know we’ll need to be flexible.

Aha- one might think that since onx has some 2024 fires it would have them all. But I was not aware of that (wonder how close I would have needed to get to realize plan B was in order??). Looks to be impacting at least one of the two gen units… good point thank you.

That's a perfectly reasonable basis on which to make such a decision... i'm assuming there are elk in each area. Or I could pick an area best suited to our hunting style: lots of glassing out to 3-5 miles, truck camps with elaborate dinners, stay out all day with midday naps in the field...

Wyoming west general 2024 LATE planning

We drew these tags, and for awhile it looked like we might not be able to make the trip, based on a confluence of forces not worth getting into here. I would have preferred to archery hunt last month but here we are. I've only been to Wyoming once, driving through to drop off another son in Big...

    Meat slicer recommendations

Second hand Hobart is the way to go if you’re able to be patient looking for one AND you’ve got permanent countertop space to give it. You don’t want to be moving it around.

Sort of random question, two of my sons are up in big sky now with an older suburban that needs an alignment. Two problems, the caster seems to be wrong (no steering return to center) and the torsion bars need to be cranked up with it sitting a little low in front. One son tried to get a shop...
