I load 47gr. H4350 with the 140 TSX. That is a case full and I worked up carefully. It shoots 1.75" 3 shot groups at 220 yards. I have taken a bunch of deer with this load and the longest tracking job was 25 yards.
A 12x14 works for two but if more than two we put up another and have a cook/meeting tent and a sleeping tent. For the floor we use the thinnest outdoor carpet that looks like grass for the floor. Water/snowmelt soaks through it and it drys fast. It is also very light and takes up little...
I would think if he is comfortable on/around horses he would do well. I also ask my wife and she said yes. They take down to 5 on summer wilderness pack trips.
So you know your son and can go from there.
My wife said it was the best vacation she has ever been on, now that is saying something. We saw moose, deer, a grizzly bear and cub and elk. The elk were in heard of 60-70. Food was great and the guides, wranglers, cooks and the staff at the ranch worked hard to make our trip memorable and...
This was a guided hunt.
18 miles from the trailhead. Snowed all night and day after we got to camp.
The country we hunted.
The results on day 5.
Wife and me with my elk. Great trip with great people.
Here are some #'s sighted in at 200 yards.
At 1400' poi at 100 will be +1.43
A 10,000" poi at 100 will be +1.34
At 120 yards at 10,000' poi will be same as 1400' poi.
These #s were bases on 150gr. Nosler BT
That Sierra 180 SBT sighted in 2" high at 100 will be dead on at 200, 8" low at 300 and 23" low at 400.
A 165 Nosler AB will be 1.6 high at 100. dead on 200, 7" low 300 and 20" low 400.
These will vary a little depending on FPS and altitude.
Get a 28 Nosler if your bear hunt is spot an stalk or a 375 Ruger if a baited hunt. A 308 is just a short 06 so do something out of the box.
PS I have shot whitetails with a 375 RUM and 338 Win and they both worked fine with little meat loss.
My findings with Superformance and with TSX bullets.
1. Super shoots better at max loads or near max.
2. Super sometimes likes mag primers to get best results.
2. TSX''s like to be seated at or near the front groove.
YMMV
