Too easy to apply, should have to climb to the top of the sheep or goat mountain to enter your ticket.
I like the Idaho rule that you can only put in for one draw hunt a season.
You camped in my backyard!
Elk numbers have been increasing as mule deer have been on a long term decline. Still some very nice bucks killed in recent years.
January - March of 2017 we had heavy snow and cold, trimmed the deer numbers back some...
Anticipation....
With supply staying about the same and demand increasing, makes it tougher.
Non-residents even worse.
I feel that Idaho residents may have the best opportunities for big game these days.
Worked forest survey plots in the Malheur NF for 2 seasons in '94 and '95. The most roaded and overgrazed of any public lands I've worked or hunted in the west. Nearly zero remaining old growth doug firs, only stumps. Many locals hunted big game whether they drew or not.
I know unit 51. Archery antelope hunted it starting in the 80's. Then worked forestry plots there that I contracted from the Challis NF in '96-'97. Then drew the November bull elk hunt on the 2nd draw in '17.
Beautifully rugged.
The biggest negative is the very young volcanic rock that...
Have been hunting the A zone on public land on and off since the 70's. Have hunted it 15 seasons or so over the years. Enjoy hunting in the heat. Deer are small enough so getting the meat on ice and cooled quickly isn't difficult. And it's the earliest season!!!
Hadn't hunted it for 10...
Very good - Thank you! The new regs will be out in a few weeks and would enjoy your input. Have put in for the White Mt hunt a few times because of the better odds, however I've been putting in for one of the others in recent years, would rather do a mid winter Jack O'Conner type hunt.

Have max points - couple hunts with 1:30 odds last year.
If I live long enough and the rules don't change.
In the F&G plans is to increase tags to 42 rams. Anybody know anything?
Varget 43.9
120 TTSX
Not worked up as much as many here do but it has killed animals well to 300 yards.
Have a Rem Mountain rifle with a leopold 2-7. Not to light, just right. Enjoy carrying it.

NR price did go up last year. Missed that. Resident didn't.
Drawing odds look to be about 5% overall with many better.
LopeHunter - Think your Idaho NR moose stats are wrong.
542 Bull moose tags - 10% go to NR - 54
About 1000 NR put in. 5% odds
Cost - $185 for a non refund hunting license.
I would buy an Idaho deer tag every year and hunt and put in for moose draws.
I've worn out more rain gear than...
The hunting shows just make it look way too easy.
Started big game hunting in '74, before gortex. Regular rain gear is all we had.
When gortex came out in about 1980 is was expensive and really didn't get completely waterproof until about '86 or so...
