Shane, a 15 yr old I go to church with let me know a few months ago he'd like to go hunting and kill his first buck. Thursday was the youth opener last week so I drug him around. His parents are divorced and neither one of them hunt. He came prepared. I took his .270 savage to the range and ran some rounds through it to make sure he was on.
After about 1800 vertical ft gain and a few hours of glassing I found two bucks bedded. When they stood up, Shane picked the one he liked best and made a great shot. I tried to keep him calm....but after the buck fell he said "that was the coolest thing I've ever done!!"
It's pure joy to watch a kid get that excited. Too many memories are made on the couch with a controller these days. When I hear the phrase "I'm a gamer", I say to myself and sometimes out loud "no,you have no game---you are a looser."
Imho the best memories are made in the outdoors, working hard, fighting the elements, and learning life lessons. Congrats to Shane, and thanks to him for letting me be there as he cut his teeth on his first (and hopefully not last) Muley buck.
Don't ask about the mutilated deer face in the truck. I told him to cut the ears off to save wt and he wanted to see what effort it takes to euro one in the field. That's as far as he got when I had the rest of the deer quartered up ready to go.
