Youth day magic

My younger son had a pretty good youth day. To set the stage, the day before, he was just given the news he tore his UCL ligament in a football game and is done for the season and heading for surgery. So needless to say he was down. In fact we put bipods on his rifle because he can't hold the gun up with his hurt arm.

Saturday afternoon saw us trying to get the last of our hay making done so he was tied up in a tractor until about 5:00. He grabbed his gun, threw on an orange hat and headed for his spot. Around 6:00 a bachelor group of bucks crossed the field and he missed the larger of the three. He was pretty bummed.

He takes after his dad apparently and wanted to take a look around. High on the ridge far away was two bucks and one looked like the big boy we had been watching for two years. No one was hunting there because we had just been there gathering up hay. He moved quickly and closed the distance. We estimated the range at 400. While debating the range the tractors spooked both bucks and in the woods they went. Light was fading fast. He made what I think is the only choice he had. He moved another 100 yds and layed on the ground with his bipods out. 10 minutes later the two bucks reappeared. Sparred for a moment and the shot rang out. 200 yds and he never took another step.

We had been watching him for two years at least. My oldest son and I both had the safety off ready to shoot at him last year on separate occasions, but it never worked out. The neighbor actually had film of a poacher shooting over 100yds with a crossbow about a month ago. The game Warden had been watching the area closely because of him. He was 22" and weighed 170. Notice in every picture he has his left hand on his knee because he can't hold the arm up.

Going to be hard to top that one, beautiful buck!
Hope the surgery goes well!

Wow that’s so awesome! Congrats to him! My son killed a small 7pt. He will die when I show him this! Hope he heals up quick.
