Wyoming elk special NR draw

I’ve been on the fence. I could draw general W in the regular this year if points requirements stay the same. But I think I’m gonna keep stacking points and hold out for a decent draw unit (and consequentially contribute to that point creep). I’ve never hunted out of state and kinda want to go for the gusto. Especially since I’m getting better at finding elk closer to home.

Think I'll just apply regular and then buy OTC general if I don't draw...all for about $60.

I’m in for the reg I just couldn’t stomach parting with an extra 1200 . Nothing like last minute app.
Do you laugh out loud or just grin a little bit every time you post that you pay next to nothing for Wyoming and Montana?
Didn't apply for either the special or regular draw. Could possibly be living/working enough in the next 2-4 years in WY to get residency.
Get your butt here early enough to qualify for R licenses, welcome to Wyoming if you do.
I've been working 5-10 months a year in WY since 2016, but haven't met the residency requirements yet. Hopefully so by 2026
You probably remember when I lived near Wheatland in 2018/19 and was trying to use hounds to hunt cats/coons near there?

I drank the koolaid and put in for special for me but regular for my son. Still not sure what unit(s) I'm going to end up applying for. This January deadline for a mid May draw really does suck.

@buzz this is a serious question why hasn't the app date changed. It use to be tags got issued way early. Then because seasons weren't even set the draw got changed to later with your help. Why doesn't the app date get moved back to after seasons get set? I dont see the benefit of keeping old date and actually probably costs more to have all the changing that people have to do. Also who can do the app date change game and fish or does legislation have to do that? We have seen how great lately they have been with a few bills and would hate for them to have to get involved.

Yeah I know it is the outfitters who like the early lock in period. Same folks that like the wilderness rule. Just seems like another way the nonguided nonresident gets the shaft. Can't complain too much though or I would be a lousy whining ungrateful nonresident hunter.

I went Regular, 2% random odds. I do have better odds in the reduced price draw for a cow tag, fingers crossed. I intend to draw in Colorado this year, so don’t really need to throw the extra cash at Wyoming this time.

Commission can change it, but the outfitters will throw a fit. No legislation is required, they already granted the authority to the commission.
We tried to get the application deadline pushed back closer to, or at the same time as deer/pronghorn but the outfitters wanted first crack at NR elk hunters. They even fought changing the early elk draw to after the season setting meeting.
IMO, the most important piece of that change was getting the tag splits right so R and NR weren't getting shorted either way. At the time, R's were being under issued about 500 elk tags due to changes after the commission season setting in April. Also, any new seasons established at the April meeting was EXCLUDING NR's from applying the first year. It also gave biologists time to get field data back on harvest, winter conditions, classifications, etc. before season setting meeting in April. It was really a giant pain in the ass for everyone having that early NR elk draw.
It was the right thing to do and if the "worse" case scenario was holding NR money for a few months, then so be it. I wasn't going to go 25 rounds with the outfitters and risk losing the most important part of the change.
Sometimes you just can't get it all, myself and @JM77 did try though.
