That is a nice cow! Have you guys considered a cow hunt in 6?
Will do,or we could do a cow hunt in 19 or 7 or somewhere not super far from u
I hunted a private ranch there in 2014/15. I was going to get a type 4 tag there last season then went with area 8 at the last minute cuz I had a friend with a cabin out there who could update me on the herd whereabouts. Have you hunted it? Area 6 is on my short list for a type 1 tag this season because of the proximity. I've yet to personally see an elk on public land in area 6.
Area 7 is always on my short list for a cow hunt.
What's odd is that I'm from Laramie, and I've never seen a single elk in area 8 until this month.
We might have another kid on the way by then. If so, I'm planning on hunting close to home. PM me if you draw.
I'm heading back out that way in early December hoping to fill my cow tag.
Will do! Thank you for the sound advice.Don’t forget to get yourself a Cherokee Park HMA permission slip. If Cherokee park road is drifted, don’t try to bust through the snow. You WILL get stuck.
Just got my Cherokee Park HMA slip on Friday. That was a really good idea and suggestion and I appreciate it.Don’t forget to get yourself a Cherokee Park HMA permission slip. If Cherokee park road is drifted, don’t try to bust through the snow. You WILL get stuck.
That area can be hard due to the elk movements. Sometimes the elk stay in Colorado, hunters do not at times. Access can be hard due to road closures to protect the deer herd. Congrats on the harvest!! Looks like you found some good advice from the landowners, that is
About these unlimited cow and calf elk tags sold this year? What would be the best way for a non-resident to get permission from one of these landowners? Are there landowners that really want to get rid of elk that would give permission?I have a cow tag for this area and have hunted it several non-consecutive days starting in November. I've been on Red Mountain twice, Jelm Mountain once, and each accessible state section near Tie Siding twice. I've yet to see any sign of elk beyond some old tracks in the snow. I'm not to the point of being discouraged yet because I expected January to be the best time to hunt the unit, but I'm interested to know if anyone has any personal experience hunting in this unit they're willing to share. I'll be going out again this weekend, to both Tie Siding and Jelm. I'm praying the snow pushes them into the public land.
Good luck! They could have given permission to the existing Type 6 holders years ago and didn't. I don't think they have any interest now with even more tag holders. But now any and all of their buddies can get an extra cow tag that doesn't count against their total tag numbers. This was never about giving more access to the public.About these unlimited cow and calf elk tags sold this year? Prayer mostly. What would be the best way for a non-resident to get permission from one of these landowners?
Or lots of moneyPrayer mostly.
I tried that route with one of them last year when I had the tag. I got hung up on half way through the call.Or lots of money
This is really good advice. This is a hunt that you can’t dedicate a week to.I would discourage a non-resident from applying for this unit unless they lived in Fort Collins and could drive to the area a couple times a week in December and January.
Yeah if I got permission, will I would probably be out there for a week or two at least. Yeah, I'd be coming from Wisconsin and I'd be bringing one or two blocks of fresh cheese if one of these landowners would be interested? This is really good advice. Lead with this when you start calling landowners, good luckcoming from Wisconsin and I'd be bringing one or two blocks of fresh cheese if one of these landowners would be interested?
