Wyoming Antelope Application Choices

Wasn’t always the case 20 years ago a lot of tags that go for 1-3 points today could be had as second choice tags. Or so the old guys say. Also I'd assume probably a few units that are mostly private land that you could still draw second choice. Getting a buck tag and not loosing your points could be a good selling point for some Outfitter.

20 years ago? I've drawn quite a few 2nd or 3rd choices up until last year.

But yes, for the most part, 2nd and 3rd choices are pretty much gone now for type 1 and 2 choices.

Good point last one I hunted 2nd choice was 2020 but not exactly a quality tag. Don't really know how long it's been sense a "quality" tag could be had second choice and sense that's subjective for everyone just threw out 20 as a place holder.

I use to work at a store that sold licenses. Busiest day of the year was the day leftover antelope licenses went on sale. Back then it was all paper licenses, and people would be lined up at the door well before 5:30am, when we opened.

Personally I'm sad to see hunting has become more of a rich mans sport.
That's not even what's happened here. It's the common man realizing that western adventure was within his grasp, and going for it. The Internet is more to blame than anything. How much are NR Doe tags? If you can afford a cell phone bill, you can afford to hunt Wy.

Ya ba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dibba dum

Pronghorn in WY remains a pretty accessible hunt on public land. Not everywhere, not every year for nonresidents, but the biggest issue is the lowered populations of animals, I feel, not rich vs poor on this one.

In my defense, I was referring to "hunting" in general .... no specific state or species. And as far as that goes you can include "fishing" as well.

So much emphasis has been put on what a person has to have to enjoy the sport. Expensive high end firearms, clothing, lodging, electronics, etc. Cost of new truck is out of this world. Then for fishing there's all the high end fish locators, sonars, cameras, high end rods and reels, etc.

In the old days you could drive up in your old pickup truck or station wagon and get permission to hunt somewhere without paying exuberant trespass fees.

Young adults and kids see their dads have all that stuff and feel they need to have all that as well in order to participate. Todays youth aren't interested in spending that kind of money.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

^^^ don't agree but hey we don't go out and buy all the newest stuff to go hunting, maybe I'm missing that.
Hard to use cameras, sonar and all that in a small stream while trout fishing.

If kids think you need all that then show them they are wrong, and yes we have plenty of public access without needing to pay for it. Seems that maybe the parents are the ones thinking they need private access and all that expensive gear to go hunting.

It constantly baffles me that guys come on hunting forums asking about the gear they need to go hunt, out west or anywhere, and they get a litany of high dollar equipment that is "required", complete BS. Warm protective clothing, basic equipment to take care of your game, gun/bow that you can hit where you aim and go hunt.

Stream trout fishing out west is a little different than lake fishing here in the Midwest.
Yes, there is a lot of public access out west but most of it is not exactly "free". Maybe so for residents but most NR hunters stand little chance of gaining access to public without a large number of PPoints or paying big $$ for a special .... at least for any GOOD public access. I don't think most people are going to want to drive all the way out there with all the expenses to hunt subpar public land.
