World Cup competition begins today

Costa Rica v Germany referees are an all female crew. First ever in a World Cup.

Germany not wasting any time as the cross comes in on a German counterattack to score on a fine header.

Bye bye to heavyweights Belgium and Uruguay.

The Ghanaians rejoiced in defeat to Uruguay as they did just enough to keep the South Americans in third and out of the knockout rounds. (Remembering Luis Suarez handball and the resulting missed PK that kept Ghana from advancing in 2010)

Always kind of a crusher in this round when a team wins a tough match only to find out they won’t be advancing. As looks to be happening to Cameroon.

Argentina and Brazil representing South America
Senegal and Morocco representing Africa
USA representing North America
Europe gets Holland, Spain, Croatia, England, France, Portugal Poland and Switzerland
Asia represented by Australia, South Korea, and Japan

Still pulling for a rematch USA v England, with a wild card nod to a hot Morocco team

You folks are crazy. The only good thing that ever happened in a world cup...

France tossing in a white flag to end it via a red card. So funny.

The Netherlands finished when presented/manufacturing a quality opportunity. USA did not, although we had more than 3 more entries into the final third.

After the first goal, we played like we needed to equalize in the next two minutes, and left ourselves open to some beautiful give and go's to proceed into the danger zones, with superb movement of the other attackers to find the space to finish.

I will continue to watch the rest of the tournament, with great interest but with less enthusiasm.

USA typically played good D, those goals where all defense lazy breakdowns. First especially, scorer ran right past Dest who just jogged back, big opoops. Other 2 were just not.marking goal side.

Biggest issue all 4 games is lack of a pure goal scorer. To many quality chances not scores

They have some impressive youngsters, Aronson for one

HUP HUP Holland, bittersweet with USA being eliminated, however my family has direct ties to Holland, our motherland. Born in Holland, MI IYKYK

France v Senegal early game today. France has blinding speed on the pitch.

England v Senegal later game. England should rule the air.

Style sometimes makes the match.

Fascinating to hear the different stadiums noises. After a little bit of study, I think one could pick out which teams are playing, just from the supporters reactions.
