I know forest service budgets don’t reflect population changes, but I would’ve guessed more was being done not less.

I was down there last about 6 years ago and I climbed a couple peaks with a buddy that lives in Stevensville. Trails were in decent shape then, and recently cleared. Sad to hear.
I don't climb peaks. I elk hunt. Like I said, the popular probly gets the attention. mtmuley

Right. These weren’t popular peaks, and I was helping scout elk. He kills one most years.

I guess in the bitterroot I figure most trails from Lolo to Sula are popular with the day crowds. Different where I live.

Yep. It is. mtmuley

Where is the money going to come from to contract?

Who will administer the contract?

Who will inspect the contract?

They fired the people who do all that and froze budgets.

SNAFU...
Also might add, IF you have the money, and IF you have someone on staff (COR), it takes time to put the contract together, has to be put out to bid for a length of time, and you have to get people to bid. Then it needs to be approved. Then payments need to go out after the work is inspected.

People need to start thinking straight, this shit doesn't just happen at the snap of a finger.

So you people in "normalsville" can just cut out a trail without being hauled off to Gitmo? I have personally been pulled in for "questioning" on the suspicion that perhaps I cleared a trail on USFS.

"There were 4-6 stumps of LIVE trees cut (damaged) ILLEGALLY with O.D in the range of 1-1/2" to 2" in a 4 mile section of trail."

"We heard you were seen using that section of trail in the last year in possession of a chain saw"

"Well I used that trail and had a saw to cut stove wood for my camp"

"We have checked and there is no permit of record for you to cut firewood for that year in that forest section".

If the "green Gestapo " gets a nice pink slip I'll somehow manage to sleep OK

Not seeing the forest for the trees. Where will you camp and cut wood when your public forest is transferred into private hands and we all are locked put? That is the grand plan. https://www.americanprogress.org/ar...c-lands-to-finance-his-sovereign-wealth-fund/

Yep. Very familiar with the federal contracting process. I’d still bet money that it ends up being contracted.

Serious question: what national forest? Never heard of that before.
