I had this email forwarded to me. I'm planning on attending. Anyone else?
The elk management committee has decided to help Bob Wetzsteon remove about 1 mile of wire and old posts from an old cattle grazing allotment off his ranch up the east fork of the Bitterroot. The location is approx 4 and 1/2 miles up the east fork highway from the Sula turn off. This will take place on saturday July 16th at 8 a.m. we will meet at the site. Since I have represented the five valley safari club on this group we should let our members know about this. The bitterroot Elk Foundation Group is planning on serving lunch at the site. The work should only take 4 to 6 hours if we have enough hands. Please bring leather gloves and wear long pants, perhaps a few hand tools to remove old staples etc.
Bob Wetzsteon has his ranch in Block management and we are trying to build better relationships with the private sector, this is one way to do it. The wire pull will be properly managed.
The 2 areas we were able to improve on the elk herd was in the east and west fork. The F & G wanted 1400 elk in the west fork for their management goal and we got 2000 elk. They wanted 2600 in the east fork and we got 3000 elk the rest of the units in the Bitterroot we gave them what they wanted for management objectives and even cut back about 125 on the east side north of Hamilton as this has heavy agricultural use. We now have a starting point to work from and our group will stay intact. We also will be contacting many of the private land owners to try an expand our hunter opportunitys. We now have detailed maps of the Bitterroot valley along with the land owners names down to 40 acres lots. Our hope is to open some of these up for more hunter opportunity for handicapped and youth along with being able to deal with site specific elk problems.
