Wild fire map

Anybody going west to hunt may want to monitor this map. fireweatheravalanche.org. It is nearly a real-time map with good info on road closings around fire areas etc.

I never used to have much interest in this, until my kid went to work for a fire crew, and now I monitor a couple different sources.

This is a Montana-centric one that is pulling from essentially all the same sources as the one you listed.

Something Ive found interesting in working with fire related GIS data is that stats like Acres, percent controlled, etc. are all more wishy washy than folks would like to believe.

CA has a similar one... you can actually get the MODIS and VIIRS (Fire detection satellites) layers as REST APIs from NASA.

The onx layer for fires is also helpful. I'm sure most people know about that one by now though.

Agreed. The other page that I monitor is fsapps.nwcg.gov. It is pretty good, but not updated as quickly. It still gives the acres for the fire that my kid is on, like it was several days ago. It is a good page, though and it is interesting to follow this stuff. Tis the season, fires are popping up all over Idaho and some in Montana, Nevada,Utah, Wyoming and NM.
