Ok I have settled on one of the hunts to take my son on. We want to do a merriam turkey hunt. So which state has the best public land with easy to get tags? We are coming from Missouri so I know we will have a drive. Looking to camp out and enjoy a father son adventure. Trying to start planning now so we can get everything lined out.

Thank for any information

Nebraska has cut back on the tags, but more importantly the stupid turkeys have disappeared.

Lots of arguments about why, but no good answers yet.

From my experience (which isn’t a whole lot) I think your chances are high in any state that has merriams. I tried New Mexico last year with success. I have seen a lot of turkeys in Colorado but haven’t made it back during the spring to try them yet.

One thing you may want to check on. I took my son to Wy years ago and I really didn't even think about it. At that time you could hunt turkey over bait (corn) and with a rifle (something to that effect).
We found this out after we got there, and my son looked at the guide and told him he was full of 💩 if he thought we were hunting this way!! So we wore out some boot leather because we made him take us as far out as possible to avoid this scenario. My son killed a tank of a Merriam 🦃. Guide laughing said he had never seen anyone walk as much as we did but it's all about how and where you learn to hunt. That being said, definitely check all rules and regulations. I had never imagined you could do that.

Looking into Wyoming now. If anyone has hunted out there on public in the spring when is the best time of the season? Early or late?

I would think early because every turkey killer from the south east thinks they have to use all of their vacation and travel west from late April to the end of may.

^^^ This has definitely become the scenario along with more resident hunters than ever it seems...... the number of hunters I see in the Black Hills has doubled in the last 5 years.
