Where we should be heading

idea

I could cut my driving down, if they let me sleep at work more, put a bed up, or something like that. I could move halfway to work, I guess, that would cut it a lot. That would be the most feasible thing for me to do, move right next to work and walk.

If I take the bus, it takes 4-5 times longer to get to work, not a good bus system for where I live.

Double car efficiency? That's the first thing to do he said. Boy that seems a long way off. How do you do that?

So?

How are you going to double your mileage/gallon Ithaca?

I guess I could get a motor scooter to go back and forth to work and around town, they get like 40-50 mpg. and my truck and car sure don't do that.

He says that's the first thing we need to do, double our mpg. I guess 1/2 ing our miles would be ok.

Tom don't you think that this is a direction we should be heading instead of drilling everywhere we can?

Hybrid cars using hydrogen, electric, ethanol. The article gave examples on what to do. Milage for cars was on the way up until the soccer moms needed all the SUV's. Just think if we got rid of all the pick up trucks on how much less gas would be needed to be produced. :D

Nut, I think we should do both, drill and get better useage and alternative energy. That's 3 directions, I guess. We can't not drill, the demand is to big, and our economy would be shut down. You think there's oil in Afganistan?

Double the mileage? I guess we should be riding ATVs at 50 mpg, instead of a pickup, eh Ithaca?

That would be better maybe? Don't drive the truck up there, park it at the edge of the ATV only roads.

SOunds like a pretty good plan nut. The technology is there to have trucks like we have now getting 30-40mi/gal. The public nor the government have pushed the manufacturers to do so. I'm hoping to add a more fuel efficient vehichle to drive for work and just use my truck for hunting.

I read this from Nuts post:

Details of the vision
Lovins' plan calls for reducing oil consumption by half by doubling fuel efficiency, mainly through ultralight vehicles with advanced materials such as carbon fiber that improve both safety and performance. "We no longer have to choose between making cars light and safe," he said.

Meanwhile, the nation must transition to alternative fuels, he says. Ethanol from corn is now sold in some Midwestern states, but hasn't proven economical elsewhere. Lovins advocates making ethanol from plant waste, such as corn stalks, switchgrass and poplar trees.

Another alternative is hydrogen, often touted as the fuel of the future. Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. Lovins wants to boost the efficiency of natural gas, then use the saved energy to produce the hydrogen.

To make it happen, he says the government should spend more on research into fuel efficient technology, advanced materials and alternative fuels; charge fees for inefficient vehicles while offering rebates for efficient vehicles; scrap inefficient vehicles; and help low-income Americans buy or lease efficient ones.

And if this plan is widely adopted, Lovins calculates that the country could stop importing oil by 2040 and run without oil by 2050. Long before then, fuel efficient cars and alternative fuels could become new growth industries for urban and rural America.

"We're in that period where one idea is dying and another is struggling to be born," Lovins says.

He's written two dozen books it says, which one is the best?
Have you read any. The guy has a slew of honorary doctorate degrees. I met a guy with 7 doctorate degrees once, you could hardly talk to him, he talked so much. What should I read, before you'll answer a question, Ithaca, all two dozen books or more? Which ones do you recommend and why?

I think I should get a scooter, I could get back and forth to work with that and save a lot of gas and get better mileage and I won't have to move. Isn't that an important step, its the first goal they list there for this guy's plan?
What are you going to do Ithaca, any ideas?
