Good info and seems to match my observations over the years. But this buck just didn't seem to react at all. Table 1 Bright red blood (arterial) matches what I saw.
I can relate to your experience, there is always the occasional deer that don't react as the book says. ;)
Hopefully people will get something out of your thread.

COEngineer- Don’t give up on copper. I shot a buck this morning with a copper bullet and this thread came to mind. Here is what was left of my heart.

I watched a 2 point mule deer hit with a 338 ultra mag that looked similar. Exit hole was identical to entrance hole. It took us hours to find it and it was still alive. Finished with a handgun. Shot in the back of the chest missing the heart entirely. Our guess was the bullet never expanded. I'd forgotten all about it until I saw your pictures. While rare it does happen.
