Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

What's your elk rifle and cartridge?

Cool rifles guys!

I'm undecided on what rifle to use this year. Just depends on the terrain. Rest assured the golf bag of rifles that live in my house have all conditions covered.

I just need to get out and practice! Looking back through my notes, my shooting volume has dropped off considerably in the last 4 years.

A few weeks ago I went out and shot 100-800 yds on a blustery day with my son, a USMC Designated Marksman. My shooting was craptastic, and his was crazy good.

He's trying to teach me how to read wind mirage at different yardages of the shot and chart the windage. Either his eyesight is way better than mine or I'm just a retard.

Haven’t been hunting elk very long , bought my 1st Rifle in 2016 a HOWA 308 with the 20" barrel and I’ve been blessed to fill all 3 tags I’ve drawn , I have used the HORNADY 168 gr A-MAX round to fill my tags

I'm planning to hunt elk with my bow this year. But, if I draw a rifle tag I'm planning to take my .308 shooting federal fusion 180 grain.

Wife and daughter use a savage 6.5 x .284.
Matt

Wow, you're shooting elk with A-max's?! What kind of performance have you been getting (aside from dead critters)? What kind of impact velocities? I kinda think of the A-Max as the quintessential "don't use on elk" bullet.

One shot kills , Roosevelt’s are 800 to 1,100 lbs , 1 elk at 50 yds and 2 others were around 280 ish , The Oregon brush is Mega thick if they go in there and it’s raining, even if it s not , Flip a coin you ever find that thing I just try to make sure they never leave the clear-cut, I don’t know anything about velocity , I’m still somewhat inexperienced in all things bullet related , I just grabbed a heavier grain for knock down power , and Hornady seems tonshoot good with my rifle, in 2017 a guy hunted with us shot a Roosevelt Bull with a 270 don’t know his bullet , damn near perfect shot , didn’t faze it , they chased that bull for over an hour and a half , I was hunting else where and came to help , I found him and put him down 100yds from escaping into a canyon, where we never would have found him , when we skinned the bull , he made a direct hit on the front shoulder socket and all it did was break the bulls leg , never passed into vitals , this bullet seems to Work for me, I’m hunting Roosevelt’s with a bow this year , might be some years before I get the 308 out to chase elk again

My Remington 700 faux Mountain Rifle in 7x57 built by Sawtooth Rifles. Has a VX-2 2-7 with a CDS turret held on by Talley LW's. Shoots 162gr ELD-X around 2715 fps. Hasn't been bloodied yet but I'm hoping this year will change things!
