Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Waterfowl, let’s see them!

I'm terrible at calling and setting up a decent decoy spread but fortunately I've got a friend who's got it very dialed in and invites me along. Howie gets a little better every time we go out and is becoming a pretty great all purpose bird dog.

Season almost over, the mighty Rio has been slow but it was a good day with very few ducks seen. Got a double on the first pair of mallards, and the drake out of the last pair. In between I let 4 wood ducks sneak up on me but I got a nice drake, barely. He managed to sputter off about 150 yards and went down in some thick willows and/or salt cedar. I didn't even get a good mark but after 10-15 minutes Maggie found it, somewhere in there, so Good Dog!

Just a handful of other ducks seen, nothing else in range but 4 common mergansers I let fly on.

One day left, will probably hit the pintail spot tomorrow, hope I can end the season on a high note.

More than likely my last duck hunt was Saturday. It was 50 degrees so we got a couple of the older kids out for a sit in the blind. We set up at 10:30am, went into town and got lunch and some rest, then brought them back out for the hunt around 3pm. It was busy enough for 2.5 hours they didn't get bored because there were birds working that they could watch through holes in the a-frame blind and then it was a race to see how many they could find after shooting.

Good luck tomorrow Randy.

Good luck tomorrow Randy.
Thanks, but didn't make it, wife was feeling poorly so I stayed home.

Overall a below average season for me. Somewhat similar to last year, but with more mallards and fewer pintails.

2.8 ducks per trip, way below average, good years are typically 4+. Just have to remember 30-35 years ago the daily limit was 3.
