I would consider anything close to a .300 win mag, wsm, ultra etc... or a good deal on a 7mm mag

If you're thinkin what I think you're thinkin, that's a lotta rifle. Most guys carry a sidearm backup to do the job. last time I left the sidearm at the house and just took my 7mm rem mag. I feel really confident with that rifle.

I've got a 300 rum winchester 70 classic blue//walnut 5 years old, like new. Shot maybe 50 times. 450.00$ let me know, I was just about to list it in the news paper.

Here's what I'm thinking... I have 1 pp for wyoming and instead of applying for a general tag and hunting this fall, I put in for a super tough to draw unit basically to bank a point. I talked myself out of hunting because I feel my .270 is probably alittle light for chasing after bigger animals like elk, caribou and moose. If I get lucky in Wyo, NM or SD (6 p.p. for 3 different rifle draws) I will need it anyway. But if I have a new toy it will be that much easier to use my Montana point or otc in colorado or Idaho. Plus I would like to have more time to get used to a new gun before taking on a new challenge. There is nothing worse than busting ass for who knows how long only to fail at the moment of truth because you are not familiar with your equipment...

Though I've never used one, I can't imagine the track record of the 270 on elk, caribou, and moose doesn't speak for itself. If that's what I had, I'd hunt and not think twice. IMO, its more about the bullet than the headstamp.

That said, if you are wanting a 300 of some sort, I think I would be looking very hard at the 300WSM in a Kimber Montana.

First, you can take the caribou out of the equation completely, they are quite possibly the easiest dieing animals I've ever seen killed, seen probably a dozen die with everything from 7mm08 to a 300weatherby and every one of them folded at the shot (heart/lungs/shoulder). SO a 270 is a great plenty for them, if you feel comfy on Mulie with a 270, you should feel fine with that for Caribou as well. And although for Moose and elk I would also consider the 270 a bit on the small side, there is probably close to 100,000 elk that have died over the years to a 270 who would disagree with me. My mother in law has killed 2 cow Moose over the years with a 243, and my father in law killed his 42" bull in Montana with a 280 rem with 140gr handloads, so at least those 3 Moose would also disagree that a 270win was too small.

Now if you just want a new rifle and are really wanting some sort of 30 caliber, and I don't blame you if you do, I'm a bit of a gun slut myself and I regularly whore myself out to several different calibers. In 30cal I would recommend a 300win mag, especially if you handload. If you don't handload then any of the the other 30cal whiz-bang magnums will do.

Dhaffner, I'm not going to tell what you what gun to shoot but I would like to know if you still want pics of this gun. Just a side note.... the 300 RUM is at the top of the food chain in the 30 cal 180 grain class. Look at the data it speaks for itself.

The top of the food chain is 30-378 weatherby. the data speaks for itself. I shoot 210 vld bergers in mine.

I have a Sako Finnlight 300 WSM that i would sell............can't compete with the price of Wingnuts gun ;) but i would let it go for $2000. Its almost brand new with a Swarovski 6x15x50 with TDS reticle.

You did not read my post very well, I said in the 180 class the rum has the 30-378 beat by a lot. .

I figured the RUM would be more but 121 bucks is outrageous. Makes the WSM look better than I thought.

Yes I would still like to see the pics.

I would love to be able to buy this gun, unfortunately it exceeds my budget... Thanks!

Thanks for the advice! The way I look at it, there is equipment that will fill the need, or equipment that is optimized for the need. I've got a spot in my safe just begging to be filled!

Wingman,

I disagree, where are you getting your data? I can assure you that neither the 300 RUM or the 30-378 beats each other by alot in any catagory, just a slight edge to the weatherby. The simple fact is the weatherby has more powder capacity. Lets see some data to back your claims.

I had the 30-378 and I got about 3450 fps with the 180 gr. Accubond. the barrel was 26" plus 2" of muzzlebrake and accurate as could be but heavy for toting in the Rockies after elk. I bought a 300 RUM and get 3333fps with the same 180gr. AB and same 26" plus 2"muzzlebrake barrel. It's not as accurate but it will shoot MOA out to the 500 yards I limit myself to for elk. The 30-338 weighed 10.5 lbs unloaded. The 300 RUM weighs 8.5 lbs. It's a trade off. As much as I love my RUMs that Accumark was the most impressive looking and shooting rifle I've ever owned.
