Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

va turkey

Thanks , I've been keeping a thought going while I hunt of a composition for such as this. I wouldn't mind a Va. hunter joining me who could call for me. This bird is smart ! He pulled the same deal on my last year.

Festus - very nice bird!

Which county were you hunting in?

I was out this morning, saw tom, as he was forced to circle me at 50+ yards, due to the horses that were around me.

I will be back at it in the am, tomorrow

skimerhorn - I hope you get that bird tomorrow!

That bird was killed in Carroll County. Good luck to all yall!!!
Daughter can't go tomorrow so I'll be sleeping in then 3D shoot.

Got busted today, had 2 gobbling at light went for the closest bird but hens got to him first. Listened to him gobble and gave him a few clucks before he finally gave up. After about an hour with no response to what I was doin decided to try to move to another ridge to see if I could hear anything, when I stood up the other gobbler I heard was to my left about 70yds standing there. I couldn't see him from where I was sitting bc of brush. It was the other one I had heard this morning coming to check me out but not goblling. Needless to say he flew off never to be seen again, and neither was anything else. At least I finally saw one, even if it was flying away.

Let me start by saying ....no bird. This morning 4 gobblers sounded off with in calling ranger. @ 8:15, 3 jakes came in but the big boy stayed behind. I decided to move to the backfield. The field is shaped like an hour glass. the bottom side is a very large field the top side is a very small field. the hourglass is surrounded by hardwoods.at the pinch point is a very small island of trees 10 yards wide with a 5-yard openings on both sides. I set up in the island looking into the small field. @ 11 am I get a gobble 30 yards on the back side. He's drumming and I see him throught the thickets on the edge of the island fan out. I set for the shot when he comes around. He stuck his head out about 3 yards from me. My barrel is about 3" to high. As soon as i lowered to fire he bolted. It was so cool to be eye to eye with this big boy. He's got character...... Hopefully a 3rd time is a charm.

hit a bump in the road this morning, @ about 8:30 the birds shut up except for the front side of the farm. The property I hunt backs up to a large hunting lease. These boys bear and Deer hunt. At 8:30 a couple of the guys decided to sight in their rifles one guy only about a 1/4 mile from me and the other down on the other end of the back side. I pull birds off the ridge on that property. So I got screwed. Tomorrow I' head back to the front side and see if that bird that was talking all morning will give me a look.

Good luck I hope you seal the deal. Hopefully the hens will start to nest and that will make the hunting better.

Dave - it doesn't get much closer than that!

The hens are scattered and I'd say nesting around here.
Keep after'em guys!!

Any of you Va. hunters want to hunt in the morning on the farm in Flint Hill give me a PM.

I now know the big guy is roosting about 50 yards from where he busted me. So new plan is single or double hen decoys set in the field 40 yards from his roosting tree.. Maybe ....:) :hump:

Would like to get up there with you sometime Dave not sure where your at. Send me a pm sometime and maybe we can make it happen.

Wish I could, but my tags are filled!

You'll get em!

We was fortunate enough to get 3 birds down in 3 days!

I tried a few new tactics as follows:
Set up in the middle of the field next to a few standing trees, instead of the field edge
Purchased 2 Avian-X decoys, instead of another brand

I wish it had a great long story, but it wasn't it happened all too fast!
Set the decoys on the hillside facing me
Now we wait, as the 1-3 gobbles that I hear aren't until 8-8:30am
20 mins goes by
I hear a gobble on the roost around 6:30a
I do a few yelps, I hear a gobble again, this time its much further away...
So, I snap a photo of the decoys for Facebook
I think it was 4-6 minutes later, I look up and see "3" decoys in front of me and one of them is strutting!
Wait...what? I set 2 decoys, a standing Jake, breeder hen no strutter
Holy smokes, I need to get my bow!
He didn't even make a sound!
Drew the bow back as the tom was pecking and scratching the Jake, waited for him to provide a nice shot...
The Gold Tip Velocity hit its mark!

My first Spring Gobbler ever, with a bow to boot!

Then the most enjoyable was when I took my 5yr old son out on Saturday, let hit the call of his choice. He liked the pot call better than the box call

He called in 3 jakes and 3 hens 20 minutes in the blind and from the neighbors property, which I had never seen them travel from!

He thought it was cool, while we are waiting, a doe came by at 11 yds. He started complaining the the turkeys were taking too long. This was probably due to the fact that they could not see the decoys through the scrub. As the dekes were set for the turkeys coming from the direction 180* opposite where they did come from.

I asked my son, are you sure you want to me shoot a turkey with my bow, he said "YES"!

We did here is is my son's 1st turkey hunt. Funny thing was he started shaking and saying he was cold! Good to see that his adrenaline was pumping, cause it was between 50-55*

Very cool wondedbowhunter that's cool 3in 3 days. I'm still waiting on number one. I thought it was gonna happen on sat, I had a gobbler at 50yds. I wanted to wait for him to get a lil closer to make sure the shot was deffinately good. Then out of nowhere from behind me comes a hen and took him straight away from the direction he came. But now I'm pretty sure I have him figured out. Hopefully I can get out there one day this week, if not definitely sat.
