I'm with you %100. I was taught to believe that you were hired on your qualifications and abilities no matter what color or gender or religious beliefs you had. Now they have a check list of all the varieties and they make sure they have one of everything. If you were the best then you were the best not just because you filled out some bullshit check list.

Yes! I am on only child raised on a cattle farm. My dad gave me simple advice. Look at the person on your right and then your left. Outwork them both and youll never worth about a job. No sick days or vacation days on a raising cattle when it’s just you and your dad. You learn to be tough and work for a living.

Postal workers are generally paid by postage, not taxes. Subtle but significant difference. One of the few gov services you don't pay for if you don't use it. And not everyone that pays postage is always a taxpayer. Single mom with two kids that makes under 50k doesn't pay federal taxes because of credits. But she does pay a postal worker when she mails something.

Congress has infused money into USPS at times, but they've also passed ridiculous legislation that hurt the organization badly. Like for a long time having to pre fund retirement benefits 75 years into the future for future employees that dont even exist yet. Having to serve every address in America for a flat rate no matter if it's across the street or across the country (i think this is a great feauture, but its challenging to the organization). Not keeping postage up with what it should be. And not being able to turn away any mail so that UPS, FedEx, and Amazon can make money on the profitable portion of their packages journey and then pay USPS to do the part of the journey that is not profitable. That's a big problem.

Where I really disagree with your idea is that a lot of the true talent within the organization ain't coming back if you try to fire and rehire. I can make more in the private sector, if you take away my tenure, me and a lot of highly trained people ain't coming back. A lot of the talent is already leaving because of all this BS. I know I'm starting to get serious about leaving. Try to hire a bunch of entry level folks with no experience to backfill the good people and itll be a challenge to say the least. You can come into my job with all the electrical, mechanical, and networking experience in the world and still fall flat on your face because there's so much postal knowledge you need to know to do your job. On the processing end I work with people you can tell them any obscure address in a town of 60000 and surrounding area and they can tell you exactly which route out of 60 plus in an instant. They can scan ten packages and throw in the time someone using the new fancy technology takes to do 3 because they have to scan, look at a screen, find the hamper, throw, scan, look at the screen...

Nixon was convinced you didn't need to be highly trained to be a postal worker and that he could use the military to process the mail during the wildcat strike during his admin. Didn't work out so good.

Give me another excuse why that distribution center will not answer their phones even for other postal agencies. Give me another excuse as to why we pay extra to have packages delivered with an expedited service and there's absolutely no recourse.

Now if the other thousands and thousands that don't give a shit were conscientious as you are then maybe the USPS wouldn't be a deep dark shit hole.
BTW, I'm guessing everyone in the postal service gets their wages no matter what. It doesn't make the tiniest bit of difference whether or not people use the mail, unless of course the postal service has switched to a commission method of getting paid.

People are angry because the USPS has brought it on themselves. I seriously doubt that anyone woke up this morning and thought "lets be mad at someone who does a good job".

I find HUGE ignorance on this key point.

I suspect a lot of HT members live in rural areas. FedEx, UPS, and others get to make their own decision on whether they will serve you or not. They will not serve areas that don't make them profit. The USPS has no choice, they have to serve anyone even those whose services costs more than anything returned--which is a huge part of the country!

When this went even further and the USPS started accepting final delivery of items started with other for profit carriers customer service went in the tank and it made the USPS even less able to meet their cost limiting mandates.

Sometimes--despite the pain, I think people refuse to listen and maybe a wake up call is needed. We are getting some of that now!

As someone who has implemented Distribution Center technology solutions since the 90's, I can give you a hundred reasons. A transactional message wasn't transferred between systems, a package fell from one shelf to another so the system thinks it's somewhere that it's not, address data is incorrect or missing a key element, package routing is incorrect or corrupted, a bad character in an address or other data field for the package stops it's progress (FDX had this problem for years with the ` character versus the ' character), unreadable barcodes, bad data transfer upstream that corrupts package data before it hits a DC, registered package dimensions are out of line with reality, packaging is unsuitable for transport, Commercial Invoice is missing or invalid, HTS/NMFC codes are incorrect, power outages, internet outages, RF device failures, missing or invalid postage, HazMat or Controlled item issues...the list goes on...

The vast majority of the reasons packages get 'stuck' in any DC are not "lazy employee walks past the box out of spite"
 
A little bit more rant. I entered into a contract when I PAID the USPS a fee that THEY set. I'm not talking about a package being delayed by weather or an accident or anything other disaster. Shit happens. I'm talking about a package that is sitting dead in a distribution center. There's absolutely no recourse.

Goodness knows, failure of the USPS is not the fault of the local mail person.

Also, postal workers are paid by taxes and the tax payers, as the agency lost $9.5 BILLION dollars last year alone. The wheels wouldn't be turning otherwise.

That is further reinforcement that the system is broken. Badly broken. It's sad to see a service that was so highly admired at one time turn into what it is now. I feel sorry for the dedicated people that work for the USPS.
