I've got to go down to Arizona at the end of September and help my mother pack personal belongings for her and my step father to bring back to Canada. There is an older shotgun that I have to get to a stepbrother in Montana that can't [or won't ] make the trip down to help. Could the shotgun be broke down and shipped Fedex or UPS? Can I break it down and put it with the stuff we're taking on the plane[ we're flying down and back from Greatfalls and I could give it to him when we land back at Greatfalls]. My stepfather can not make the trip due to poor health and can not give me any paper work because his Dementia has rendered him incapable of rational thought. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks PB

Legally you cannot ship it directly to your brother, it has to go to an FFL, cuz its crossing state lines. If it were me I wouldnt break it down and throw in your luggage either. the TSA frowns on it.

If it were me, I would have your bro give you a copy of his FFL and ship it to him. it usually cost around $25 for him to recieve and around $20 for you to ship it but its alot cheaper than dealing with the feds if you get caught doing it another way.

Or throw it ina guncase, declare it and have the airlines tag the guncase as greatfalls as the destination. that way when you get there, pick it up (or your bro) and its done.

Only 2 options I see legally

You can legally ship a firearm through the mail to yourself in-care-of another person. (with in the US)

personally I would render it unfireable--remove bolt or firing pin or trigger group, break it down, oil it well, box and ship.

Contact the USPS for specifics.

I think the tricky part here could be that you're a Canadian and the shotgun isn't technically yours. I know the US has screwy gun laws for Aliens... Leagally its still your stepfathers so shipping directly to yourself or your step brother is not an option, unles your mother has power of attourny and can give it to him? I don't know... Lots of 'gray' area here.

Shipping could also be a problem but I would think that if you had your step brother get a signed copy of an FFL (federal Firearms License), to take with you, put it in the shipping box and then send it to the FFL it should be good to go, but your brother would then be required to transfer the shotgun into his name, fill out the paper work and what not. Most of the FFL's around here charge $40-50 to do it anymore. On the other hand when you declare it at the Post Office or FedEx they might give you a ration of chit because you're Canadian? I don't know...

Personally what I would do is buy a hard side lockable case (required to fly with a fire arm) put it in the case and bring it back for your step brother. You must declare it when you check your luggage, sign a waiver and put it in the case. If the ticket aggent gives you any grief tell her you borrowed it and will be returning it to your step bro in MT and will not be taking it back to Canada.

Good luck.

they might give you a ration of chit because you're Canadian?

HAHAHA... Thats a Great reason to give someone a Ration of Chit :)

All I know is when I went up to Canada to hunt, We had alot of paperwork and it was my bun I was bringing in. Bringing in someone elses will cause you more grief.

Let me Recap the Situation. You have a Shotgun in AZ. And you're gonig there to pack stuff up. A StepBrother in law has rights to a gun that is in AZ but he won't go there. You are gonig to fly to AZ then Fly to Canada or Greatfalls eventually. Your Step Brother in law wants this gun but not willing to go there to get it.

So, Who's gun is it actually ? Is it your Stepfathers ? Or you'rs ? I'm guessing if the Gun isn't registered by anyone.... Uhhhhhh and your Stepfather isn't capable of disputing ...then... it's yours ? So, Since YOU have a gun now, Take it back to Canada with you and offer to ship it to a FFL dealer in his area if he ships you the money up to ship the gun to him. If he doesn't, then it's still yours and you keep it. :D :D

i just shipped my guns to alaska from wyming and it is not ilegal to send guns to your self and you dont have to have the ffl wright them in his book and stuff like that. you just send them from yourself to yoursleff but you put C/O (ffl) and send it to them and they dont have to log anything or even open it. if you wanna know more let me know

ya i just send it normal mail and they didnt say anything the only thing is that you cant have it in a gun box or anything. you can but it needs to be inside another box. just so it doesnt look like a new gun or the ffl. will have to open it witch would mean he has to log it

Thanks for the info guys. Delw I'll be in Lake Havasu from the 14th to the 20th. I'll call you when I'm down there. I have to be in Laughlin for a day or 2 depending on the luck I'm having. That's provided I have funds left over from the night in Vegas on the way down.
Moosie the shotguns my stepfathers and by rights should go to my stepbrother. Looking at a couple opptions to add it to my collection only for sentimental reasons. It will cost me more to have it brought into Canada than it's worth.
Bambistew it wouldn't be the first time I've gotten into a ration of chit in Montana but it would be the first time a gun was involved.:D

Oh man Laughlin? that might sound like a plan, April has been wanting to go for a while now. Let me talk to her and see whats up.

OK the update on the shotgun, it's now mine and it's gonna get shipped back
to my place in Canada. What a lot of crap to bring it back legally. I have to take it to a gun shop in Lake Havasu [ fax FFL's back and forth] and have them ship it to a gun shop in Montana that my gunshop in Lethbridge deals with. They do all the paperwork to bring it into Canada so I can then legally retrieve it and have it registered to my name. So add up the kaching, kaching $$$ that everyone wants along the way and and shipping then I am the proud owner of another sentimental shotgun. I have no idea what make or model it is but it's another gun passed down to my kids who are the only one in all our extensive family network that hunt.
Delw if your around this week-end I'll give you a call. I've made into the US and even though they grilled me at the border I never broke and told them I know any Hunttalkers. The picture they have of Mtmiller at the Coutts border crossing almost made me break but I managed to keep a poker face [ one I've been practicing for Las Vegas and Laughlin] and they let me into Montana. By the way the caption under Mtmillers piture said "Havre you can Keeper". By the looks of all the bushtown beauties in Great Falls I'll keep a low profile so I can sneek over to the Airport for my 6:25 flite to Lost Wages.

Dropped the shotgun off at one of the gun shots in Lake Havasu and away it went. They figure if all goes well I'll have it in the spring. On another note 7 casino's in 7 days and I'm takin home some $$. Railroad Pass broke even. Avi left a little. Golden Nugget left alot. Clear Water left a lot more. Buffalo Bill's pick up some. Tropicana Express head back above water. Mandalay Bay paid for the whole trip and also paying for the trip back to Laughlin for the Super Bowl party for both myself and the wife. Funny Moosie's picture wasn't on any of the bill's.

Just on line at the Vegas airport and I see the Canadian dollar is at par with the US dollar today so much for making a little on the exchange going home.
