Ukraine / Russia

Honest response if I gave them you would say fake news, which is why they are so nefarious.

It’s not the comical nature of the broadcasts in the 50s. It’s taking an idea that’s plausible, inserting it into the conversation and then spreading it everywhere with bots and fake accounts to the point that it seems true. Then we have a hard time separating fact and fiction.

It’s catalyzing conversations.

Small example, an American tv personality makes a statement, that statement benefits Russia/ China so they “make it go viral”, instead of the statement being passing, it becomes the dominate idea in the conversation.
I haven’t heard near the outcry for certain issues that were called Russian Disinformation by the big guy, their party, the media, social media banned all the related stories, and even the alphabet agencies carried their water. Outright lies that heavily influenced the outcome of the presidential election. Not a lot of outrage or worry from that?

I understand what you are saying. But what are some actual recent examples of other countries' disinformation having a big impact on Americans. There are several examples of our own govt, media, and social media censoring information that likely changed election outcomes, medical outcomes, investment outcomes, etc....
I mean…

This story and @Cheesehead s are my point the goal of Russia is for chaos and us to not believe anything….wildly successful IMHO

The chaos is self inflicted IMO. The fact that Brian Williams is employable and is actually turning down an anchor job at CBS, tells you all you need to know about the state of journalism in the US right now. They are a joke.

Understand that CNN is going to hire Williams now. About as bright as CNN+.

These threads wander all over the place, which is interesting.

Also interesting is how forgiving or not people are to the falls from grace that famous people have.

Brian Williams and Dan Rather each have a skeleton in the closet that can never be excused by a significant portion of the public. The same portion of the public (roughly) can forgive the former president for his various bad deeds as well as his inability to adhere to the truth.

Another portion of the public can allow for atonement for imperfect journalists but will never grant the former president the same.

I do know there are advantages to being a non famous person. Few of us would want to be known solely for one thing, not of our choosing.

Except for those who have said, "they dont care" as long as their man won and Trump lost.

I am sure Russia, China, N.Korea, Iran all like it when we self destruct ! But, as we look backwards,( which of course always gives one 20/20 vision) the coordination of certain politicians and news outlets to not just discredit the Hunter Biden laptop story, but to actually turn it around and use it against a political rival should concern everyone. I know this is not a new strategy in politics but with the openly bias news media ( both directions ) and the influence of social media in our lives, it is a concern none the less. What are we Americans willing to do and accept in order to get who we want or defeat who we dont want.

Perhaps I will change my mind as I age, but today it is hard for me to look at Biden and Trump as either the devil or an angel. As I mentioned earlier, Trump did some things that drove me up the wall, but he also did some things better than Biden--and--he knew all along that the story about him and Russia was not true and I am sure it was hard to live with. Biden, according to my parents and grandparents, was someone people from both parties liked when in the Senate, but imho he is not playing with a full deck at this time and that is a concern to me. This is not Biden or Trump is bad or good. It is acknowledging what has and is transpiring today.

I have not tried to hide my feelings, I am a young, female, conservative and I catch flak for that even in my own family . Idealist--maybe Naive --probably Young--absolutely. But today I will continue to fight against abortions after the first trimester, against boys competing in girls sports, defunding the police--and fight for securing our southern border and since we have lost men in our family fighting to keep us free, I will stand when our anthem is played.

And back to the new government agency. It may be a necessity because of the influence social media has on people today and the continuing effort by foreign governments to bring us down, but it scares the hell out of me that it will be used as a political "tool"

The problem with the Ministry of Truth is that you never know who will be in charge.

Does anyone think she will go after the DHS secretary for saying the border is under control? Or Biden, who claimed we are rapidly growing when the GDP is negative? Or Hillary for still thinking she won in 2016? Or will she chastise herself for thinking the laptop was a "Trump campaign product"? Or the federal judiciary candidate who thought it was OK to say, in a very tense time, that "police shoot unarmed black men every day" because she was an "advocate"? All, are, after all, obvious disinformation.

As an example:

Absolutely not because those things you mentioned are their truths.
I can’t wait till we get notified that we have to tune in for the ministry of the truth briefings every day good we all have iPads, iPhones, computers nearby.

An axiom with veritas, "if you like your end of the t*rd, you can keep holding it,"

I again am convinced our species isn’t capable of surviving another 50 years.
I’m a little more optimistic. I give it 100 years before society as we know it breaks completely down. It won’t be the end of humans but our population numbers should decline drastically, which is probably optimal for the planet and it’s other inhabitants.

I know that their are folks that say that the planet is not yet to it’s carrying capacity, but I think it is well past it, personally.

Hopefully society goes out with a fizzle and not a bang, that way the planet will still be livable.

I really miss Walter Cronkite. He read the news, and didn’t begin sentences with “I Think”, “I feel”, or “In my opinion”.

When growing up thru the 60's our household watched Huntley/Brinkley but I was certainly aware of Walter Cronkite. Here is an article that shows Cronkite had some critics. Two seminal moments were his report on the Vietnam war and the protests during the 68 Democratic Convention. It was not long after and the fairness doctrine was scrapped. That would mark the beginning of openly partisan news coverage. I doubt there is any going back.
