Ukraine / Russia

Moldova has a diplomatic relationship with NATO and EU but have preferred to remain neutral / I wonder if they feel any differently today

Would they be accepted if they applied ?
Pre-Ukraine my guess is iffy. Today, who knows. But then again I don’t spend a lot of time thinking about some of our smaller/newer countries. I would be perfectly fine if we had 15-20 large countries rather than the 197 we have. Unfortunately, “micro-nationalism” seems to make it more likely that in the future we will have 300 than 100.

biden is asking is asking Congress to authorize $33 billion in additional security, economic and humanitarian assistance for Ukraine.

This is on top of the 13 billion that we gave them in March.

I feel like I am living in crazy land. Hopefully congress tells them to kick rocks, but I doubt it.

Tell your congressman or woman.

Well, let's see:

Gas $2+; energy independence, exporting energy

Unemployment record low, best for minorities and women
Tax cuts for middle class
Funding for HBCU
Abraham Peace Accords
Got us out of Wars
Opportunity Zones
Brought jobs back to America
First Step Program
Border under control

Yeah, kind of a shit show.

And I don't even like Trump, but compared to Biden (or, as previously discussed, not really Biden). Look at the outcomes, not your bias.
What about the steps to try and repeal the migratory bird act? Or parts of NEPA? Or trying to limit the ESA?... few other .over by the previous administration that were not in the best interest of conservation or our public lands.

That 33 billion would do some good for conservation of our public lands.

If you're a single issue voter, you are correct. I used to be, when I was in college. Co-founded a chapter of the Sierra Club, of which I am still proud. They used to be about Wilderness.

Now that I have lived a while I have a lot more sympathy for those struggling to fill their cars with gas, heat their homes, and buy food for their families. And, just maybe, rise in socioeconomic status (HBCU, Opportunity Zones). Maybe get a fresh start (First Step Act) Maybe buy a house. I would support these things no matter who proposed them. Should have been core Obama issues.

As to why we can't have politicians who support sound economies and conservation, I don't know. Never made sense to me.

I never said we couldn't have both. I was simply pointing out that the previous administration was rolling back MAJOR protections that would've had large implications for our conservation progress in the US. Those rollback would have caused irreversible damage on hundereds of thousands of public land acres (some of which is still happening inder this admin, i understand, just not to the same extent). Another one was the attempted rollback of the clean water act. Most of these rollback attempts failed in court due to them not being deemed lawful interpretations of the law.

I totally understand the sympathy for others trying to make a living. As a recent college grad myself, today's economy has made it very hard for me to want to stay in my respective field (wildlife). I'm not a major proponent of our past two administration's, I just hope we have some real options moving forward that can include some conservation ethics and supporting our domestic economy.

You can't run for POTUS if during your term you will be 80, you can't be POTUS if you would turn 80 during your tenure.

If someone would be 80 during their tenure is in the line of succession it skips them.

Anyone got an issue with that law?
Make it 72 and I am all in. And 75 for every other govt position in the country.
Jack was 43 when he was elected and my husband use to say, the boy has STAMINA, for sure ! Dietrich, Monroe, Tierney, Ekberg, his two white house secretaries ( Fiddle and Faddle ) and of course Jackie. If he can somehow juggle all that, running the nation should be no problem at all ;) He was a well loved man for sure, no pun intended.

Seriously, I have always championed for a maximum age requirement, just as we have a minimum age requirement. I always thought 70 would work when I was under 70, but having lived past that age and speaking from personal experience ( myself as well as friends and family who lived past 70 ) I now would not be upset if they made it 65.

As to Ukraine/Russia --- IMHO, Putin is a madman and scares the hell out of me.

Does anyone here know anything about his claim to have the the fastest missiles system in the world ?

Probably accurate... though we don't know what's classified.

Also hard to say if a missile is the most effective system, ie lasers or kinetic weapons that may be superior. The US did divert a lot of R&D dollars for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and Russia/China during that period were able to put a lot of funding into these types of weapons.

Not to worry. The "Ministry of Truth" has been established.

So, the US should cluelessly allow our enemies to define the public perception of all disputes, directly mislead our citizens, and influence our government? Seems like some of us need to read more about the information battles leading up to and during WW1, WW2 and the cold war. We also need to read a number of 21st-century Russian source materials that specifically call out their need for pre-war softening of western society cohesion and willingness to fight in order to supplement their clearly inferior economic and traditional military capabilities.

Or course we also have to read about the East German state police and their abuses.

This is a very nuanced issue for democracies - one that requires thoughtfulness and balance - two things we apparently have very little of.

The US should have free speech and an honest media.

Not this person heading up the department which is the arbiter of truth:

That is not what it is for - but enjoy your partisan strawman raging b*ner issue if you must.

If a single American citizen in fact denied a sincere right to rational speech not induced by Xi or Putin by this specific workgroup, I will join you with my pitchfork. But culture wars aside, I want our security system digging deep into Xi and Putin's strategy to defeat western democracies.
