Ukraine / Russia

If this is accurate... Ugh. :(

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The bodies of more than 900 civilians have been discovered in the region surrounding the Ukrainian capital following Russia’s withdrawal — most of them fatally shot, police said Friday, an indication that many people were “simply executed.”

I said it earlier in this thread but might bear repeating, even if this conflict breaks Russia Ukraine is going to be the one that pays the price.

Zelenskyy will be ruling over a country of rubble.

“WASHINGTON, April 21 (Reuters) - Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Thursday that Ukraine needs $7 billion per month to make up for economic losses caused by Russia's invasion of his country.”

All of you that want to continue supporting Ukraine get your checkbooks out start sending your money over.

This thread is a good reflection of how much is, in a sense, enough and loss of interest sets in - slowly though it does occur. Not speaking that people do not care though I believe the "wash, rinse, and repeat" process becomes so redundant that people outside the conflict begin to find themselves numb to the setting.

There has been rape and killing of rape victims. There have been Ukrainians taken into custody and then depending on if have military tattoos then have been executed. There have been reports of excessive alcohol consumption then civilians shot for no apparent reason. This is not so much a military operation as a Russian gang killing and carting off everything that is not bolted down. Belarus is said to be a giant flea market near the border as Russian military unload the spoils of war.

But they are saving them from the Nazis…

7 billion per month doesn’t sound so bad when you consider several trillion spent for naught over Iraq…

It’s 7 billion down the drain either way. You would of thought we would of learned something from all that wasteful spending but apparently not. Good thing we can just print more. Inflation is fake news.

The countries that are propping Ukraine need to pull president the Zelenskiy aside and tell him he better get to the negotiating table. Eventually the sugar daddies are going to run out of money or lose interest in the conflict.

The majority of people are already looking for the next thing to set as their Facebook banner.

Did you think promoting the concept of democracy, sovereignty and self-determination throughout the world could be done in three easy payments of $19.99? Every dollar spent on fighting autocracies and their dictators overseas lessens the likelihood we have to endure the same costs here at home. Throughout our history it has either worked or we have been lucky.

It is one of the biggest existential challenges to modern democracies. Almost no problem is solved in 72 hrs, but that is the full attention span of the average person. So, we either let important issues die on the vine, or we manufacture a daily panic cycle (whether helpful or not) to keep "attention" on the issue. We have to understand that there are big problems that will take many years and take much money, but nightly outrage cycles and hourly tragic clickbait aren't the best way to manage them.

If you believe we have no dog in this fight, then even $1million is too much to spend. If you believe we have a humanitarian obligation we are talking tens of billions to assist with this mess. If you believe this is a "pay me now or pay me later" moment in dealing with an authoritarian Russia then $7 billion a month is just the start.

So, whether we are spending too much or too little is more about how you view our role than whether any given number is correct/troublesome.

How about $12 billion this year for "specialty"/premium coffee drinks.

According to the American Bar Association’s 2020 ABA Profile of the Legal Profession, there are currently about 1.3 million lawyers in the US.

As of May of 2020, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that the median annual wage for lawyers was $126,930.

Ya'll are drinking too much coffee.

i would venture to guess the average HT'er likes to see strong defense spending in our federal budget.

well, here you go, this is defense spending.
Probably true, but over recent years it feels like a significant part of the "traditional common sense westerner" group has become more isolationist in their foreign policy approach.
