Hey all, I've got a couple of open cans of Hogdon Triple 7 powder that are about 2.5 yrs old at this point. Does anyone know if the efficacy of the powder is reduced over time? I'd like to go to the range and shoot the muzzleloader a bit more with the intention of hunting with it more. Not sure if I should get new powder of if I can rely on the older powder. Thanks for the help.

I’ve shot triple seven that was opened over 10 years. It’s common for me to use powder for a few years when I only shoot muzzleloader a handful of times each year. There’s been a couple years where I only shot twice just to verify I was still zeroed from year before. Takes a while to burn up a pound of powder like that.

I’m not even sure how old mine is, I bought the muzzleloader with powder/caps/bullets used as a package from an older guy I know. He hadn’t hunted in several years, shot fine for zeroing and took a buck this year. Reminds me how much I hate cleaning that thing…

Triple 7 is extremely hydrophilic (absorbs water very easily from the air). If it’s sealed tight then it’s fine. If not sealed well then at some point performance will diminish.
