Trapping Thread 2024/2025

This is epic!

The raccoon in the background was replaced this morning with another in the remake overnight. Added two more traps yesterday when I checked and picked up another in one of those new sets. Two coons overnight and both of them in blind sets, 8 traps out total. Might add a couple more today and trap through this week. After that I’ll be done. Just trying to make a localized dent to help the ducks, turkeys, and pheasants. My little line won’t do much this year but I am starting to plan a bit better for next fall/winter.IMG_2789.jpegIMG_2788.jpeg

It still amazes me how much of a difference I see in areas, big and small after stuff is taken out.
I went shed hunting for lunch and saw some monster gobblers running around in areas they didnt just a few years ago.

All that to say, I bet your little line is still working two fold!

I’m getting too cocky. Today’s check was a humbling moment. One little raccoon in a blind set and 3 snapped traps. Fun to be out and hear the turkeys gobbling this morning
That would get me real excited.....
Good catch on the little one.

I caught another raccoon this morning. This was the third raccoon in that same trap since Sunday. Today’s makes 6 since Sunday with 11 traps out total. Haven’t been taking pictures in the dark the past few days as I’ve checked them
early. Turkeys gobbling and a rooster pheasant and I surprised each other at spitting distance in the dark this morning.

That’s a very diverse season! Next year I’m going to try to more dry land trapping. I’ve done most of my trapping around small water. Next year will be branching into new territory

I have two creeks that run through my place, thinking of building some boxes for mink/weasels along the creek for next year. Assuming they could be pretty small, just need to find the traps I'm going to use and size them from that I suppose. Anyone have a box design they like? I was thinking 4 walls about a foot/18" long and then chicken wire over one end?

I wouldn’t use 110s on dry land. I’d use 120s. Lesson I learned the hard way.

I’ve tried all kinds of different boxes and baits for mink with zero luck. I think you’d have better luck with bottom edge sets in the creeks. Maybe some pocket sets if there aren’t too many coons to screw them up.

I’ll echo a few others, I used my marten newspaper boxes with 120’s for mink one winter and only ended up snapping skunks in them. I agree with the 120’s. They are just that much more powerful of a trap.

You might get some weasel/ermine in them but you’d be better off setting a weasel box for them. I don’t have my measurements with me, but the ones I built years ago were just wide enough for a plastic pan Victor rat trap in them. I want to say I used a single 6’ fence board to make them. Fun project! You could always set a 120 mink box and then nearby set a weasel box too.

I added a couple more traps to my creek line yesterday afternoon and ended up with another raccoon in the dark today. This one was caught in the remake from the single I caught on Tuesday.
