Trapping Thread 2024/2025

Unsuccessfully tried some bottom edge sets last year, but everything is froze up right now and I’ve got a spot where we’ve found quite a few mink tracks so my youngest son and I built a couple boxes today. Didn’t have any hardware cloth or chicken wire and needed to honor the edict my wife made about not buying any more stuff for trapping this year so I used landscape fabric for the back. Hopefully will still breathe and allow the scent of bait to come through.

I’ve done a few of these and weasel boxes too just making the back a solid board with a bunch of 1/2” holes drilled in them.

Wut

I got a skunk early this week in a flat set. Shot him double lungs from a long way away but he still sprayed. I watched him spray like a showerhead and it just slowly lost pressure as he died. One of the most terrible smells known to man and nothing like the relatively tame smell you get with one hit on the road. Got a trail cam pic today and a couple buzzards were on the carcass so hoping they clean him up completely.

Had one pull a wolf fang and get away a week or so ago. I spooked it pulling into my place for a night time hike. Well…that Duke 550 hanging from her front paw must have made it hard to catch rabbits because she couldn’t resist a bobcat rear quarter and I ended up with a coyote with a trap on both front paws!

Really???!
What kinda ground were you in? Sandy, pure mud??? I can’t believe it pulled out a wolf fang. Crazy.
Glad you reconnected and got your trap back too.

I honestly think the freeze thaw heaved it and busted it loose. Was in clay with some rocks.

That’s pretty crazy man! I’ve never had one come close to coming out but I’ve got different ground here. Glad it worked out well
Same thing for me. Never had one even start to come out either. Had some I couldn’t even pull after last season. I honestly don’t know what happened but she got it out of there and it was full intact can see the fang on the pic above

Interested in how the boxes work out. We have a couple brides full of rock you cant drive a anchor in. The water isn't deep in the creeks and freezes up fast. We were thinking of building some boxes and hopefully running the new duke 120 super mag if they come out with them this summer.

Learning opportunity for me here. How do you dispatch to avoid spraying? Also how do you deodorize?
There is a lethal injection method that works but you need an extended syringe pole. I can tell you it works, but I wanted longer than a 4ft syringe pole…pretty nerve wracking walking up to them. Slowly and talking nice to them. PM for details!

What is with my mental hang up with trapping. I've been hunting for a bit and I dabbled in trapping briefly, but it just seems different to me. Does someone have a similar feeling or thoughts? I support it 100%. I just think I haven't had it explained to me very well.

Oh, I didn't catch them. I just took pictures of them at a fur sale.

I never have figured out how to dispatch without them spraying.

I think it's a big myth to prank new guys.

Yeah, I kinda get it. The way I see it now is that my traps are hunting 24x7 and if I set them up correctly and studied and planned wildlife movement, actions, etc. I might have a chance to get something. Coyotes are humbling creatures when trying to trap, bobcats are a ton of fun. Also if you like to hunt turkeys every racoon you can take out of the ecosystem saves a ton of eggs/chicks.

Ok, tell us how you release a badger. Any stories about releasing mountain lions would be welcome, too.
+1 please share your experience. I have decided I am done with bobcats here (this season) but nervous how to release.
