Trapping Thread 2024/2025

That is exciting. Though I am not in favor of cell phone transmitting cameras for hunting, for trapping they are a great tool, and arguably increase the ethics of trapping by reducing the amount of time an animal is in a trap. Getting texts like this at 3 morning made it hard to go back to bed and wait for daylight or in the middle of a work day, wait to get off work.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you find when you finally make it to your trap!

I put some come on a few sets for that exact reason. I could get out earlier verse them having to wait for my evening checks. Now I can leave this class a little early!

I see the benefit of the cell phone cameras and I am looking into one. I just want to get a good one. My son has a buddy who is having a bobcat issue and it would be nice to have the camera to watch a couple sets. plus it would be cool to look at how the animals approach the set and work it

I had a small line out that I left baited but snapped everything while I was out of state for nearly a week. I went back through it today to reset everything. Creek I was trapping along rose or backed up from the river during a pretty good patch of thawing days. I had a couple conibear boxes that were set low in the creek and two dogproofs that were set low. Both boxes were staked with shallow rebar stakes. I’m guessing the ice sheets moving destroyed the boxes and probably pulled the traps/stakes out. The DP’s are under water/ice sheets right now, staked well. I’m pretty confident that the DP’s will be recovered but the conibears are probably gone. Damn. I pulled the remaining traps. So much for trapping plans this weekend.

Got a call from the warden today. Guys dog got caught in my trap. I have 5 on my line. Double gated, past a dead end. National Forest. Closed year round to motor and off-road vehicles so no setbacks required. Nearing 30 miles out of town. Had my sets tagged as required and my flat sets were on sign but in the hillside. Dude called FWP and searched out and triggered another set, which is illegal by state law. Warden said I wasn't in trouble because I abided by the law.... What about the guy that didn't. Interfering with the lawful taking of wildlife is a criminal offense but he gets a warning. Bet your b*lls to bullets had the trapper violated the law he'd get charged from hell to breakfast. It costs me a lot of time. Money. Effort. Resources. Diesel to ensure that I follow the law and check these sets daily for the care of the animal just to have my work destroyed and contaminated by a person who didn't " know before you go ".... Last 8 checked, ignorance of the law is not a defense for breaking it. Thoughts ?
