Throwback Thursday

Early to mid 80's. First deer I remember my Dad killing when we were around. He got the home made hang on stand. My sister and I sat on a giant limb..I remember popping open a Pepsi bottle and then the woods coming to life. A doe came crashing by with this guy close on her heals. After my dad shot another 7 point came chasing along but he let that one go..20 years ago and I can still remember it like slow motion. Growing up it was often all 3 of us in that one little stand. I would sit on the platform with my feet hanging off, my sister on the seat and Dad would stand....It's a wonder how any of us are still alive but that goes with many of our great adventures!

Randy, your last post brought me back to my youth at a pond down the road from my parents place. I used to fish that thing every day in the summer with a good friend of mine. He moved in 8th grade or so and we went our separate ways.
I found out last winter that he had been battling his own demons and took his own life. In his final letter he mentioned me and the great summers we had doing all sorts of mischievous things, he said it was the greatest time in his life. Ever since ive felt the guilt of never keeping in touch of him, but also the happiness knowing he spent the best days of his life with me at that old pond.
Ill try and dig up some photos of us, I doubt there ten years old though.

Nairobi Kenya c1968. Myself, Dad, one of my twin brothers, and my sister. The tusk I am holding is the "working" tusk, the other longer thinner one Dad always called the "fighting" tusk. The working tusk is missing a pretty big chunk of ivory as the PH "backing up" my dad shot the tusk as the dead-on-its-feet-elephant reared back to collapse in his tracks. My dad wore out literally more than a handful of soles off his elephant ear shoes he had custom made from this bull. I have the shoes, but sadly my feet are just a little too large to wear comfortably. Ditto the hippo hide shoes.

why are your legs tied together?

Good eyes Mudranger1. The straps of a freebie TWA flight bag had come off my shoulders and were then wrapped around my legs. You can tell how happy I am to be standing there!!

CITES restrictions were in the process of being negotiated so my dad had the tusks and a couple of leopards sent back to the states a year before we moved back. As it turns out the early shipping was not necessary as the import/export restrictions were not imposed for several more years.

Okay, let's see if I can get this to work... I've spent a few years looking at everyone else's photos because I couldn't figure out how to post my own.. jryoung's directions to carnage the other day sounded like something I might be able to pull off, so hopefully this works...if not, my apologies!

My father passed away before we were able to deer hunt together, but he did plenty of it when he was a young man (prior to being loaded down with eight kids). This is a photo of one of his hunts; he's the 5th guy/deer from the left (in his hunting party), near Brandon Manitoba in 1949....back in the old days when he walked up hill both directions to school and back!

jr - You were living in style with Rainer from a bottle...it was Grain Belt or Old Milwaukee from a can at our house! Cheers to ya!

My dad got this deer in 1946 north of Gooding Idaho, while home on leave from the Navy. The antlers hung on the shop on the family farm forever. about three years ago my brothers and I had them mounted for Fathers Day. We had them scored, I can't remember off the top of my head what they went but I think I remember the ranked around 14th for the state. We're going to have them measured again because the Taxidermist thought the guy who measured them may hove shorted them just a bit.

A truckload of Blactails from a mid 80's late hunt. Back when California used to have deer. A couple in there borderline booners.

Well guys here it goes....1985 was my first hunting season. I never had a dad, grandfather, uncle, cousin or anyone I know who hunted or could teach me how. . I grew up in NYC, Queens NY to be exact. I could remember as a kid playing pop warner football in the South Bronx and coming home over the Throgs Neck Bridge after the game and seeing all the deer on peoples cars and trucks durning football season. I was always amazed and intrigued buy deer. I asked my dad could he take me hunting and he said no he never hunted so I left it at that. As the years went by and I got older, my interest in the outdoors grew deeper and deeper. I grew up fishing with my dad and brother all the time but hunting was never part of the plan. So at 18 I decided ..Im going. I was always the one who would just do it and figure it out as I went along. I went to a local gun store...(against my parents will) and bought a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06. I was as green as they came...I literally knew nothing, not a single thing except that deer lived in the woods and thats where I had to go to get one. I bought a scope(dont even ask ) and 2 boxes of ammo and off to the range I went. That hunting season I drove my 1977 Monte Carlo up to Deleware County a few days before the season opened trying to find a place to stay.In a small town general store I came accross a card with a womans name and number on it. Her name was Else and she boarded and feed hunters. For $30 a night I got a room and 3 meals.....so far Im good. I had a map of the county from fish and game and started looking for state game land because I wouldnt dare tresspass. I found a large area of public land and in the morning my plan was to go to the highest point and sit. The next morning I started climbing well before dark and didnt stop until it started getting light. About 2 hrs after sitting on a huge rock I caught some movement through the trees and this 6 pt stepped out. Needless to say I shot the buck that morning and that ignited a fire in me that burns as hot now as it did that day.....

Really enjoying this thread, so thought I would share, I remember this picture well, I got up at 3.30 am on the 1st June 1996, the first day I could fish and keep a Salmon for the pot. My little darling daughter has now flown the nest and is 22 years old, god I am getting old!

Cheers
Richard

That's impressive. Not sure many people of that time, or today, would have the determination and drive to pull it off like you did. Thanks for sharing.
