Here is a picture of the country where the elk was taken.

This is my early season spike camp on "big antler pass". A heavy snow had moved the elk and deer to lower elevations the day before. I'm cooking track soup for dinner!

This is where the big boys are rumored to live-----sometimes.

Extreme elk hunting! The trail to the top goes through this avalanche chute.

KC,

The tent is a Walrus Zoid 1

Elk Hunter,

Here is the story from an earlier post.

Last Thursday I came across a bull bedded in the timber. At first I thought it was dead the way it's rack was twisted, but then it's ear flicked. It was sleeping! After awhile it woke up and sat up. It looked like it was going to blow out, so I took the 40 yard shot with my 358 Win. It never got up. He turned out to be a nice 5 point bull.

Then it turned into a Gong Show. First I forgot to pack my knife and the only one I had stashed in my truck was a mickey mouse one in my Gerber all purpose tool. It ended up working better than I expected however. Then I was hunting in a new area in Montana that I was not familiar with. This was the first time I found myself longing for a GPS. The area was a gentle sloped, non descript, thick lodgepole forest. I got turned around a bit packing out the first load. I searched several hours in vain to relocate the elk before darkness forced me to quit. Upon exitting the woods, I finally figured out that I was looking in the wrong area. The next morning I went straight to the rest of the elk, and the rest of the packing was uneventful.

I'll post photos when I shoot up the rest of my film.

Thanks for sharing the pics and a nice bull! I was suprised I didn't see a ParaTipi though. ;)

wow can't say I'd be longing for a hunt in that country with that weather. You're far tougher than I.

Congrats and nice bull, story and photos.

Pointer,

I shelled out enough clams for the rifle. If I went with the entire Kifaru outfit, my "banker" would fire me! I have the gun bearer on the Kelty pack and it works great. The little tent, other than trying to get in and out, works great too. I was in it in zero degree weather and there was condensation inside. Traps the body heat well and weighs less than 4 lbs.

BHR- I definitely know where you are coming from! I have yet to convince my 'banker' that any of the Kifaru gear is worth it, though I keep trying. Actually, I've had pretty good luck with my $20 Coleman Dome tent, but definitely need something lighter as this thing goes nearly 10#!!

If I don't go with a paratipi, I'll definitely look at something similar to what you have. Another cheaper alternative that is similar to the PT is the Black Diamond Megemid.
